About the role

Berkeley Law invites applications from tenured lateral candidates for full-time, tenured faculty positions in the field of “AI, Inequality, and Society” (AIIS). This role is part of a campus-wide initiative that brings together the Computer Science division of the EECS department, the departments of Sociology and Statistics, and the schools of Information and Law to examine how Artificial Intelligence may reshape society and individual lives, potentially exacerbating or narrowing existing inequalities and altering opportunity structures.

Areas of interest for the AIIS initiative include, but are not limited to:

  • Employment
  • Algorithmic accountability and systemic fairness
  • Data governance and civil liberties
  • Data, information, and markets

Responsibilities

  • Advance rigorous legal scholarship and intellectual inquiry, particularly in AI, Inequality, and Society.
  • Teach and mentor students from diverse disciplinary, educational, and experiential backgrounds, including at least one first-year (1L) required course.
  • Prepare students in legal theory, doctrine, and practice while engaging broader political, social, and economic contexts.
  • Foster an equitable, inclusive, and interdisciplinary learning environment.
  • Contribute to the Law School’s public mission through excellence in scholarship, teaching, mentorship, and service, including addressing significant legal and societal challenges.
  • Engage in public service involving AI, Inequality, and Society or related issues, as well as service to academic, professional, and community institutions.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application):

  • Hold a J.D. or equivalent international degree or a Ph.D. or equivalent international degree.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Five years of law teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to fostering an equitable, inclusive, and interdisciplinary learning environment.
  • Record of advancing rigorous legal scholarship, particularly in AI, Inequality, and Society.
  • Experience or plans for public service addressing AI, Inequality, and Society or related issues.
  • Alignment with Berkeley Law’s public mission through research, teaching, mentorship, and service.

Pay

The current salary range for this 9-month academic year position is $203,900 – $333,600. Off-scale salary and other components of pay may be offered to meet competitive conditions, resulting in compensation exceeding this range.
