About the role
The Math Professional Tutor is responsible for providing individual and small group tutorial support to HFC students. This position interacts primarily with students, faculty, and staff. The Professional Tutor may provide tutoring in-person or online.
Responsibilities
- Must be highly conversant at developmental level (e.g., Basic Math, Pre-Algebra, Elementary Algebra, Intermediate Algebra, and Trigonometry).
- Ability to support via tutoring all or majority of courses offered at Henry Ford College in program/curriculum/subject area.
- Ability to tutor students individually and in groups in designated skill for understanding and acquisition of skills, in concept understanding, and facilitate comprehension.
- Able to assist students in areas of weakness, while providing appropriate academic guidance.
- Able and willing to quickly learn and demonstrate applicable software packages and other topics covered in our supported courses.
- Work closely with other departments and faculty as necessary to provide the best services from subject-specific workshop series, group tutoring, and study sessions.
- Where applicable, demonstrate the use of technology.
- Skill in active listening by giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
- Able to use good judgment and work effectively under pressure.
- Able to maintain of records and information.
- Able to assist the Learning Lab Coordinator in and training of peer (student) tutors.
- Identify and develop content-specific resources to support student learning.
- Participate in training and professional development activities.
- Possess an enthusiasm for the subject area, patience, and a willingness to help others.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in program/curriculum/subject/etc. or a closely related field (e.g., Math Education, Statistics, Physics).
- Advanced or terminal degree in program/curriculum/subject/etc. or field (MA/MS in Mathematics or Math Education, Statistics, Physics) preferred.
Skills
- Content-matter expertise in mathematics (all levels, but especially MATH-010, MATH-100, MATH-110, MATH-115, MATH-131, MATH-141, MATH-165, and MATH-180).
- Ability to tutor students individually and in groups.
- Knowledge of applicable software packages.
- Active listening skills.
- Good judgment and ability to work under pressure.
- Ability to maintain records and information.
- Enthusiasm for the subject area, patience, and willingness to help others.
Benefits
This position is part-time, with a maximum of 24 hours per week, and is subject to renewal each semester (Fall, Winter, and Summer).
Pay
Compensation is based on degree level.
