About the role
Leads all activities associated with multiple and comprehensive technical aspects of theater productions, including procedures and administering/monitoring budgetary expenditures consistent with budgetary allocations, and training of staff/students. May be responsible for leading the maintenance of theater venues, shops, and storage, including facilities and stage equipment, tools, and materials, and leading the implementation of operational procedures for all users within the facilities.
Reporting to the Director of Operations & Technical Production of the Campus Performances & Events Office and receiving some work direction from the Sr. Production Manager, this position will support a team of technical and operational staff across CPEO. The Production Manager provides technical expertise in the planning and producing of CPEO events, ensuring sound, lighting, and video services properly support the programs of the Campus Performances and Events Office.
This role primarily serves as one of the production managers for CPEO and other Arts and Activations initiatives, managing operational facets of the facility, including audio-visual system maintenance, repair, inventory, training, mentorship, and advising of student staff. The position ensures day-to-day operational and technical activities run smoothly and applies industry best practices to coordinate and operate the technical support of various events, including performance art, dance productions, festivals, and full-scale music and theater performances.
This role supports the Sr. Production Manager in supervising and training a student technical team, including hiring and training student technicians in the safe use, operations, and maintenance of audio, visual, and lighting equipment. The Production Manager also supports other Campus Performance and Events Office areas, including events and traditions across campus, and may serve in various production capacities based on the needs of the production season.
In the absence of the CPEO Sr. Production Manager, this role is responsible for leading staff, contracted crew members, and student technicians in executing events and performances. The position guides workload and schedules proper staffing for events at CPEO-managed venues and is responsible for implementing and operating safety protocols.
Responsibilities
- Lead technical aspects of theater productions, including budget administration and staff/student training.
- Maintain theater venues, shops, and storage, including facilities, stage equipment, tools, and materials.
- Provide technical expertise for planning and producing CPEO events, ensuring sound, lighting, and video services meet program needs.
- Manage operational facets of facilities, including audio-visual system maintenance, repair, inventory, and training of student staff.
- Coordinate and operate technical support for events such as performance art, dance productions, festivals, and full-scale music and theater performances.
- Supervise and train student technical teams in the safe use and maintenance of audio, visual, and lighting equipment.
- Support events and traditions across campus, serving in various production capacities as needed.
- Lead staff, contracted crew, and student technicians in the absence of the Sr. Production Manager.
- Develop and implement safety protocols for events and venues.
- Apply industry best practices to ensure smooth day-to-day operational and technical activities.
- Manage workload and staffing schedules for events at CPEO-managed venues.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- High level of understanding and skill in operating lighting, video, and audio systems for theatrical performances.
- Demonstrated organizational and project management skills to produce high-quality events that meet client needs.
- Demonstrated negotiation, analytical, and research skills to interpret data and negotiate contracts/proposals in the best interest of the institution.
- Knowledge of crowd management, crowd safety protocols, security, and emergency procedures for small, medium, and large-scale gatherings.
- Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills to convey complex instructions to disparate constituencies.
- Ability to translate technical documents for non-technical staff and provide clear directives.
- Strong working knowledge of University and collective bargaining policies, including safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge and skills in financial and personnel administration, including producing timely reports.
- Experience in developing staffing schedules and performance management.
- Strong problem recognition, avoidance, and resolution skills.
- Established skill in analyzing information, problems, and situations to define objectives and formulate logical conclusions.
- Thorough organizational skills.

Pay
Annual Full Pay Range: $73,800 - $131,200 (prorated if appointment percentage is less than 100%)
Hiring Pay Scale: $73,800 - $102,000 / Year
Hourly Equivalent: $35.34 - $62.84
Factors determining compensation include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure, certifications, and organizational needs.
