Production Lead - 2nd Shift
About the Role
This position is responsible for performing all duties of the assigned production area while directing and coordinating activities of others. The role is hands-on, occupying a direct labor position and assisting in workflow coordination, troubleshooting with operators, and leading by example. The position also coordinates area activities in the absence of the Supervisor.
Responsibilities
- Works with the Shift/Production Supervisor to prioritize team efforts, ensuring quality, shipments, and data integrity requirements are met.
- Monitors and updates the production schedule to prioritize workload in the working area.
- Ensures employees are trained in proper procedures for operating machinery, including mixing or blending dry chemicals and extrusion of color.
- Ensures employees follow proper procedures for raw material consumption.
- Provides leadership and expertise in SAP procedures or processes.
- Establishes and documents processing parameters and product characteristics to optimize productivity, consistent quality, and customer specifications.
- Documents work completed and contributes to the upkeep of required paperwork (procedures, records, logs, manuals, etc.).
- Completes all necessary documentation at the end of the shift.
- Acts as the primary contact for the production area, product line, or function, liaising with management and support groups.
- Communicates procedural changes or quality issues to the team.
- Leads the team in safe work practices, housekeeping, and environmental compliance, reporting exceptions as needed.
- Maintains housekeeping standards.
- Leads troubleshooting activities and facilitates contact with support groups like Maintenance.
- Coordinates raw material logistics with operators and Warehouse Associates.
- Participates in training new employees and retraining associates in processes and methods.
- May provide input for annual employee reviews and disciplinary actions.
- Initiates work orders to maintain production lines.
- Supports the company’s vision, mission, and guiding principles.
- Follows Environmental, Health, and Safety rules and guidelines while performing procedures.
- Covers for the Shift/Production Supervisor when absent.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Leadership experience preferred.
- Experience managing direct reports.
- Proven extruder or machine operating experience.
- Mixing and weigh-up experience.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- Quantitative skills.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs continuously for an entire shift.
- US High School diploma, GED equivalency, or relevant experience.
- Adherence to health and safety regulations, including constant use of protective gear.
- Forklift experience preferred.
- Flexibility in shifts is a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
- Bilingual skills are a plus but not required.
Physical and Environmental Demands
- Regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; use hands to handle tools or controls; and talk or hear.
- Occasionally required to sit.
- Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 55 pounds; occasionally handles up to 250 pounds.
- Requires close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Use of safety equipment (e.g., safety glasses, shoes, dust masks, hard hats, respirators, face shields, hearing protection, chemical suits, gloves, aprons) as dictated by plant safety guidelines.
- Exposure to wet/humid conditions, dust, fumes, airborne particles, chemical dust, risk of electric shock, vibration, non-hazardous chemical agents, and outside weather conditions.
- Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts.
- Moderate noise levels, with exceptions in high-noise areas.
