Product Tax Consultant
About the role
As a Consultant, Product Tax at Nationwide, a Fortune 100 company, you will lead enterprise-wide governance and oversight of product-related tax reporting and withholding to ensure compliance with federal and state tax laws. This role involves reviewing tax filings, assessing and monitoring product tax risks, translating regulatory developments into practical tax strategies, and collaborating with business partners, IT, vendors, and the Tax Center of Excellence (COE).
This position is based in Columbus, OH, and requires residency within 35 miles of One Nationwide Plaza. The role operates on a SuccessFlex basis, with in-office requirements according to the department's current hybrid schedule.
Responsibilities
- Review federal and state tax returns and perform on-site reviews with business partners as required.
- Perform governance and oversight functions, including tax risk assessments and audits, to ensure compliance within business line partners.
- Monitor product and tax laws, regulatory developments, and analyze enterprise impact; communicate findings to management and key stakeholders.
- Represent and serve on product tax industry committees.
- Research and analyze product tax risks; recommend solutions and tax strategies for new product launches and changes.
- Design and test tax withholding and reporting logic in collaboration with business analysts, IT, and vendors; act as primary point of contact with key vendors on day-to-day matters.
- Manage and review user access to key product tax systems used across the enterprise.
- Review responses to IRS and state information requests and/or external auditors; work closely with tax analysts, consultants, and attorneys to identify risks, tax adjustments, and penalty mitigation.
- Develop, monitor, and provide insights into tax analytics, including forecasting.
- Verify accuracy and completeness of tax calendars and communicate with key stakeholders.
- Develop training materials and conduct sessions for internal stakeholders.
- Represent the Tax COE in meetings with business partners and key stakeholders; communicate tax issues and listen to changes in the business environment.
- Assist with managing day-to-day operations of tax reporting and withholding across the enterprise.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree with studies in tax, law, or accounting.
- Progress toward CPA certification, Series 6, and/or LOMA designation preferred.
- Minimum of six years of tax experience in a financial services and/or multi-line insurance company, public accounting firm, or law firm.
- Knowledge of statutory and/or GAAP accounting, modeling, and tax systems.
- Strong research techniques and ability to communicate with management, insurance regulators, IRS agents, and consultants.
- Ability to analyze operating results to project tax consequences and anticipate regulatory questions.
- Leadership skills, competencies, and experiences may take precedence over other criteria.
Staffing exceptions must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resource Business Partner.

Pay
The national salary range for this role is $108,000–$200,000, with an expected starting salary range of $108,000–$162,000. Placement within the range is determined by skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope, complexity, and location of the role, as well as market labor costs. Sales incentives based on performance goals may be available in addition to this range.
For part-time roles, compensation is prorated based on hours worked relative to a full-time schedule.
Schedule
This is an exempt position with a normal office environment. Extended hours may be required during periods of high work volume. The role operates on a hybrid schedule with in-office requirements as determined by the department.
