This is a full-time, remote-eligible position with the National Institute on Aging (NIA), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS).

About the role

The Senior Program Advisor will provide expertise and strategic advice to NIA on improving the discovery and development of therapeutics targeting aging mechanisms. These interventions may offer novel preventive and therapeutic strategies for multiple age-related conditions. The advisor will assess the status of aging translational research, identify coordination improvements, pinpoint opportunities for new therapeutics development, and address bottlenecks in the clinical testing pipeline. The role involves collaboration with NIA staff, academic researchers, and biotech/pharmaceutical companies to enhance therapeutics discovery, development, and clinical testing.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the current state of aging translational research.
  • Identify steps to improve coordination among ongoing activities in therapeutics development.
  • Determine needs and opportunities for new therapeutics targeting aging mechanisms.
  • Identify bottlenecks in the pipeline from discovery through clinical testing.
  • Develop and implement activities to enhance NIA’s efforts in therapeutics discovery, development, and clinical testing.
  • Engage with NIA staff, academic researchers, and industry partners (biotech/pharmaceutical companies).

Qualifications

  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. nationality is required; foreign nationals or legal permanent residents are not eligible.
  • Doctoral-level degree in biomedicine or a related biological field, or a master’s-level or higher degree in engineering, bioinformatics, or an emerging or related scientific field.
  • At least one year of specialized experience demonstrating expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • Discovery, development, and/or preclinical or early-phase clinical testing of new therapeutics, including private-sector pharmaceutical or biotech experience.
    • Research on aging mechanisms, therapeutic target identification, design and testing of candidate lead compounds, preclinical testing, or Phase 1/2 clinical trials.
    • Leadership in evaluating biomedical intervention studies from preclinical through clinical trials.
    • Experience addressing complex, precedent-setting evaluation issues in product development involving scientific controversy, far-reaching implications for clinical research, or widespread economic effects in healthcare delivery.
    • Active role in developing significant scientific or regulatory guidelines for clinical research evaluation.
    • Invitations to speak at or chair major national or international meetings and symposia.
    • Other rigorous accomplishments in a relevant or closely related field necessary to NIH’s mission.
  • Current federal Title 5 employees must have at least one year of equivalent experience at the GS-14 level or above.

Pay

Annual salary range: $155,700 – $235,600.
