About the role
The Louisiana Department of Public Safety & Corrections – Corrections Services Division of Probation & Parole – Adult seeks to enhance public safety through the supervision of criminal offenders. The Probation and Parole Officer is responsible for supervising and investigating offenders through probation, parole, and pardon assignments.
Responsibilities
- Serve the needs of those who support and/or rely on the services provided.
- Comply with policies and procedures of the organization as well as State Civil Service rules, and all applicable federal and state laws.
- Form opinions objectively and decisively based on relevant information and in accordance with established standards.
- Generate ideas, manipulate ideas, and make unconventional connections to develop original approaches.
- Supervise felons and misdemeanants through counseling and referrals to community resources on social adjustment problems.
- Enforce conditions of supervision and perform all aspects of the violation process under close supervision.
- Conduct criminal justice social background investigations of offenders and make recommendations for decision makers in the criminal justice system.
- Conduct arrests, transport violators, prepare reports to courts and parole board, and attend and participate in probable cause and revocation hearings.
- Investigate and determine amounts of victims' restitution, set payment schedules, and collect and disburse victims' restitution, supervision fees, fines, court costs, and other criminal justice monies.
- Place offenders in appropriate drug treatment, vocational rehabilitation, or mental health programs; assist them in obtaining emergency financial aid and support and provide crisis intervention services.
- Administer drug tests by obtaining urine samples and evaluating results.
- Assist in conducting jail operation audits on facilities housing DPSC inmates.
- Conduct disciplinary hearings for adult inmates in CRCs.
- Work with Probation and Parole Officer 1, 2, 3, P&P Supervisors, P&P Specialists, P&P Program Managers, P&P District Managers, Administrative Program Managers.
Requirements
- Three years of experience in corrections or law enforcement; OR Three years of continuous active military duty (all Military Occupational Specialties apply); OR Six years of full-time experience in any field; OR A bachelor's degree.
- Necessary Special Requirements: Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license and willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.
Qualifications
- Experience Substitution: Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field.
- Disqualification: An applicant who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence or a felony, or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Pay
The Probation and Parole Officer 1-Adult has a Special Entrance Rate of $1,872.00 Bi-weekly. The Probation and Parole Officer 2-Adult has a Special Entrance Rate of $2,003.20 Bi-weekly. The Probation and Parole Officer 3-Adult has a Special Entrance Rate of $2,213.60 Bi-weekly.
Schedule
This position requires the incumbent to handle and carry firearms and may require completion of a 17-week Police Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy to attain POST certification.
