About the Role

Working at Cal/OSHA means contributing to programs vital to the health and safety of California’s workforce and communities. This role involves collaboration, diversity, and the enforcement of the California Labor Code and regulations to protect employees and educate employers, benefiting the state’s economy.

Under the direction of the Deputy Chief of Consultation Services, Process Safety Management and Engineering Services, the Principal Safety Engineer (Elevators) has full supervisory and oversight responsibility for the Cal/OSHA Elevator Unit and local Elevator Unit District Offices statewide. This position implements and participates in developing Division policies related to safety engineering, inspection, and permitting of elevators and other conveyances, as well as the certification of conveyance companies, mechanics, and inspectors.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise, plan, schedule, direct, assign, evaluate, and review the work of staff, including Office Support, Management Services Technicians, Analysts, and Associate Safety Engineers (Elevators), through subordinate supervisors (Senior Safety Engineers).
  • Train, promote upward mobility, and maintain discipline of employees under supervision.
  • Ensure Elevator Unit District Offices operate in accordance with DIR-DOSH directives, rules, policies, and procedures, aligning with the Department’s Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals.
  • Set priorities, evaluate staff performance, and travel throughout the state as needed.
  • Develop and implement policies related to safety engineering, inspection, and permitting of elevators and other conveyances.
  • Oversee certification processes for conveyance companies, mechanics, and inspectors.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office-based, requiring prolonged stationary work using a computer and cell phone, with frequent responses to telephone and email inquiries.
  • Travel via private, state vehicle, or public transportation (e.g., automobile, airplane), including occasional overnight travel.
  • Ability to remain stationary for extended periods; enter/exit vehicles; and conduct fieldwork involving ascending/descending elevator hoist ways, accessing elevator car tops, machine rooms, pits, and machinery spaces around elevators, escalators, and other conveyances.
  • Transport up to 25 lbs. of work equipment or materials.

This position is located at the Division of Occupational Safety and Health - Elevator District Office in Arcadia (488 E Santa Clara St., Suite 206, Arcadia, CA 91006) but may be filled in one of the following locations: Arcadia, Oakland, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San José, or Santa Ana.

Qualifications

Pay

$13,892.00 - $15,782.00 per month. New state employees will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or the minimum of the alternate range, if applicable.

Schedule

Permanent, full-time position with hybrid telework options.
