About the Role

Working at Cal/OSHA means contributing to programs vital to the health and safety of our community, workforce, and state. As the Principal Safety Engineer (Elevators), you will make a meaningful difference for Californians by overseeing the Cal/OSHA Elevator Unit and local Elevator Unit District Offices.

Responsibilities

  • Implement and participate in developing Division policies related to safety engineering, inspection, and permitting of elevators and other conveyances.
  • Certify conveyance companies, mechanics, and inspectors.
  • Supervise, plan, schedule, direct, assign, evaluate, and review the work of staff, including Office Support, Management Services Technicians, Analyst I, Associate Safety Engineers (Elevators), and Senior Safety Engineers (Elevators).
  • Oversee training, upward mobility, and discipline of employees under your supervision.
  • Ensure Elevator Unit District Offices operate in accordance with DIR-DOSH directives, rules, policies, and procedures while promoting the DIR-DOSH Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals.
  • Set priorities, evaluate staff performance, and travel throughout the state.
  • Conduct fieldwork, including ascending/descending elevator hoist ways, accessing elevator car tops, machine rooms, elevator pits, and machinery spaces around elevators, escalators, and other conveyances.
  • Transport up to 25 lbs. of work equipment or materials.

Working Conditions

  • Primarily office-based, requiring prolonged stationary positions using a personal computer and cell phone, with frequent responses to telephone and email inquiries.
  • Travel via private, state vehicle, or public transportation (e.g., automobile, airplane), including occasional overnight travel.
  • Ability to remain stationary for extended periods, enter/exit vehicles, and perform fieldwork in various elevator and conveyance environments.

This position is located at the Division of Occupational Safety and Health - Elevator District Office in San Jose: 224 Airport Pkwy, Suite 350, San Jose, CA 95110. The position may be filled in Arcadia, Oakland, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San José, or Santa Ana.

Requirements

To be considered for this role, applicants must be reachable on an employment list, have transfer eligibility, or have reinstatement eligibility. To gain employment list eligibility, applicants must complete the relevant exam. Additional information is available in the exam bulletin.

Pay

$13,892.00 - $15,782.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
