Principal Safety Engineer

About the Role

The Principal Safety Engineer (Elevators) has full supervisory and oversight responsibility of the Cal/OSHA Elevator Unit and local Elevator Unit District Offices. This role implements and participates in the development of Division policies related to safety engineering, inspection, and permitting of elevators and other conveyances, as well as the certification of conveyance companies, mechanics, and inspectors.

You will supervise, plan, schedule, direct, assign, evaluate, and review the work of staff members, including Office Support, Management Services Technicians, Analysts, and Associate Safety Engineers, through subordinate supervisors. Responsibilities include training, upward mobility, and maintaining discipline of employees under your supervision. The role ensures that Elevator Unit District Offices operate in accordance with DIR-DOSH directives, rules, policies, and procedures while promoting the DIR-DOSH Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals.

This position sets priorities, evaluates staff performance, and requires travel throughout the state. There is one position available, which may be filled in Arcadia, Oakland, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San José, or Santa Ana.

Responsibilities

• Supervise and oversee the Cal/OSHA Elevator Unit and local Elevator Unit District Offices.
• Develop, implement, and participate in Division policies related to safety engineering, inspection, and permitting of elevators and other conveyances.
• Certify conveyance companies, mechanics, and inspectors.
• Plan, schedule, direct, assign, evaluate, and review the work of staff members through subordinate supervisors.
• Train, promote upward mobility, and maintain discipline of employees under supervision.
• Ensure Elevator Unit District Offices function in accordance with DIR-DOSH directives, rules, policies, and procedures.
• Promote the DIR-DOSH Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals.
• Set priorities, evaluate staff performance, and travel throughout the state.
• Conduct fieldwork, including ascending/descending elevator hoist ways, accessing elevator car tops, machine rooms, elevator pits, and machinery spaces around elevators, escalators, and other conveyances.
• Transport up to 25 lbs. of work equipment or materials.

Requirements

Working Conditions

• Primarily working in an office environment, requiring prolonged stationary positions using a personal computer and cell phone, and frequently responding to telephone and email inquiries.
• Traveling via private, state vehicle, or public transportation (e.g., automobile, airplane), including occasional overnight travel.
• Ability to remain stationary for extended periods of time and enter/exit vehicles.
• Conduct fieldwork that may involve ascending/descending elevator hoist ways, accessing elevator car tops, machine rooms, elevator pits, and machinery spaces around elevators, escalators, and other conveyances.
• Transport up to 25 lbs. of work equipment or materials.

Pay

$13,892.00 - $15,782.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Schedule

Permanent, full-time position with hybrid telework options.
