Principal Safety Engineer

About the Role

The Principal Safety Engineer (Elevators) has full supervisory and oversight responsibility of the Cal/OSHA Elevator Unit and local Elevator Unit District Offices within the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR), Division of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH or Cal/OSHA). This role implements and participates in the development of Division policies related to safety engineering, inspection, and permitting of elevators and other conveyances, as well as the certification of conveyance companies, mechanics, and inspectors.

Responsibilities

• Supervise, plan, schedule, direct, assign, evaluate, and review the work of staff members, including Office Support, Management Services Technicians, Analysts, and Associate Safety Engineers (Elevators), through subordinate supervisors (Senior Safety Engineers).
• Train, promote upward mobility, and maintain discipline of employees under supervision.
• Ensure Elevator Unit District Offices operate in accordance with DIR-DOSH directives, rules, policies, and procedures, and align with the DIR-DOSH Mission, Vision, Values, and Goals.
• Set priorities, evaluate staff performance, and travel throughout the state as needed.
• Implement policies related to the inspection, permitting, and safety engineering of elevators and other conveyances.
• Oversee the certification of conveyance companies, mechanics, and inspectors.
• Conduct fieldwork, including ascending/descending elevator hoist ways, accessing elevator car tops, machine rooms, pits, and machinery spaces around elevators, escalators, and other conveyances.
• Transport up to 25 lbs. of work equipment or materials.

Working Conditions

• Primarily office-based, requiring prolonged stationary positions using a computer and cell phone, with frequent responses to telephone and email inquiries.
• Travel via private, state vehicle, or public transportation (e.g., automobile, airplane), including occasional overnight travel.
• Ability to remain stationary for extended periods, enter/exit vehicles, and conduct fieldwork in elevator hoist ways, machine rooms, and other machinery spaces.

This position is located at the Division of Occupational Safety and Health - Elevator District Office in Santa Ana: 2 MacArthur Place, Suite 700, Santa Ana, CA 92707. The position may also be filled in Arcadia, Oakland, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San José, or Santa Ana.

Pay

$13,892.00 - $15,782.00 per month. New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.
