Principal Engineer - Plant Design
This position is designated as part-time telework and will require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project in Reston, VA.
About the role
Bechtel is supporting the development and execution of several combined cycle power projects over the next 5-10 years. During the development phase, teams will support multiple projects concurrently. Following project award, dedicated project teams will be formed, and the Principal Engineer Plant Design will have functional oversight for the combined cycle power projects.
The Principal Engineer - Plant Design will support the development and execution of combined cycle power projects in the Plant Design discipline, utilizing technical knowledge to interpret, organize, execute, and coordinate engineering technical aspects for complex power projects. This role involves project planning, proposal review, and ownership of engineering elements of capital estimates to ensure projects meet requirements within scope and budget.
Responsibilities
- Plan, develop, coordinate, and review plant design and piping engineering work on large projects or assignments in support of a global business unit.
- Develop conceptual designs for plant design and piping projects with specialized or unique requirements.
- Examine and analyze pipe configurations for ANSI/ASME code compliance.
- Interpret new or special regulations, codes, standards, criteria, and performance data.
- Optimize facility layout based on piping and instrument diagrams, client requirements, current technology, and operational and maintenance requirements.
- Provide technical input to meet procurement requirements.
- Prepare or oversee the preparation of discipline estimates and work plans in accordance with project scope, schedule, and budget; support implementation and assist with performance reporting.
- Review and approve key design documents, supplier drawings and data, material specifications, drawings, and change orders for assigned projects.
- Develop and coordinate special technical educational and training programs for Bechtel personnel.
- Establish technical investigations and client interviews to determine work scope and cost estimates for a project’s plant design aspects.
- Oversee design, development, modification, evaluation, and constructability reviews of piping design and plant equipment layout.
- Ensure the unique and complex requirements of combined cycle power project plant design aspects are met.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or master's degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant field.
- 13-15 years of relevant experience or 17-19 years of relevant work experience.
- At least 10 years of prior experience working on piping design and plant layout for combined cycle fossil power plants.
Skills
- Ability to perform power plant and equipment layout considering requirements for access, operations, maintenance, and safety.
- Ability to optimize pipe routing considering requirements for cost, access, operations, flexibility, and thermal stress.
- Experience with specification of piping, pipe supports, valves, insulation, and in-line piping specialties such as expansion joints, strainers, and flanges.
- Working knowledge of piping design codes and standards including ASME B31.1, AWWA, NFPA, and US plumbing codes.
- Ability to work with and read Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams.
- Experience working with SmartPlant suite of products including SmartPlant P&ID.
- Willingness and ability to take business trips to India.
