Primary Care Physician

About the Role

We are seeking a Primary Care Physician to support the Veteran community in the Montevideo, MN area. This position is open to all candidates, including Locum or Traveling professionals.

$160+ per hour

8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday

Responsibilities

A typical day includes:

• Seeing an average of 12 patients per day, with appointment times varying between 30 and 60 minutes.
• Spending approximately 80% of time in direct patient care, including:
  • Annual physicals, screenings, and vaccinations to maintain good health and prevent disease.
  • Treating common illnesses and minor injuries, such as colds, flu, rashes, and sprains.
  • Helping patients manage long-term health conditions like hypertension, high cholesterol, and diabetes through regular check-ins, medication management, and ordering tests.
  • Providing counseling and patient education on healthy lifestyle choices, nutrition, and weight management.
  • Caring for chronic and acute conditions, including but not limited to:
    • Hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia
    • Joint pain, upper respiratory issues, skin conditions
    • Mental health concerns, musculoskeletal issues
    • Neurology, gynecology, geriatrics, ambulatory conditions
• Being present on time for all scheduled clinics.
• Providing consultation and instruction to referring physicians regarding appropriate indications for procedures.
• Determining the appropriate course of treatment and communicating with referring clinicians in person or by phone.
• Initiating appropriate social work referrals for identified homeless veterans and patients without primary care providers.
• Following all established medication policies and procedures; no sample medications shall be provided to patients.
• Providing discharge education and follow-up instructions coordinated with the next care setting.
• Communicating all test results in accordance with VHA Directive 1088.
• Spending approximately 20% of time on activities not involving direct patient care, including:
  • Participating in continuous quality improvement activities and meetings.
  • Referring patient/customer service issues to the Supervisory Physician, Nurse Manager, or designee.

Requirements

• Authorization to work in the U.S. permanently, without sponsorship.
• Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
• Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
• Board Eligibility or Board Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine or Family Medicine (ABIM or ABFM).
• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications.
• Previous experience as a Primary Care physician providing direct patient care.
• Previous experience with the VA is a plus.
• If selected, candidates must complete credentialing and onboarding requirements consistent with VA medical staff processes.
