The Southern California News Group (SCNG) brings together prominent publications like the Orange County Register and Riverside Press-Enterprise, serving as the largest news content provider in the five-county Los Angeles metropolitan area with 11 daily newspapers and over a dozen community weeklies.

About the role

This role introduces you to reel room operations and general tasks, including run sheet comprehension, roll identification, press setup, and cleanup. You will gain hands-on experience in setting ink, plating up the press, and webbing the press.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze imposition run sheets to accurately determine the required roll sizes for press runs, planning and preparing rolls for multiple concurrent jobs on your assigned shift to optimize press efficiency.
  • Conduct thorough roll inspections, identifying any damage and preparing rolls for use by applying double-sided tape and constructing running paster patterns.
  • Become proficient in reel operation through hands-on training and consistent practice.
  • Adhere to safety procedures at all times, maintaining a safe and organized work area throughout your shift, including sweeping, mopping, and managing oil and debris.
  • Continuously develop troubleshooting skills and expand your knowledge of press operations to diagnose web failures, identifying the root causes of breaks and unit malfunctions.
  • Actively participate in press setup and cleanup, providing guidance and support to colleagues as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and management regarding work processes and any issues that arise.
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of the web path and demonstrate proficiency in running the press.

Requirements

  • Prior production and/or manufacturing experience required; prior printing press experience preferred.
  • Ability to stand, bend, climb, reach, and kneel repeatedly during an 8-hour shift.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Specific vision abilities, including close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Pay

The hourly wage is $23.00 - $26.00, based on factors including geographic location, education, work experience, time in role, and certifications.

Schedule

Shift work required; may include coverage outside of normal business hours.
