Responsibilities

  • Work with Comms Director to coordinate the organization’s national external media strategy and manage press intake and coordination.
  • In collaboration with other Comms staff, execute rapid-response communications strategies in response to internal and external crises affecting chapters, committees, and the national organization.
  • Provide ongoing earned media trainings and resources to chapters, including sample op-eds, press releases, training, and support with media inquiries.
  • Manage chapter support requests and ensure chapters receive resources and training on earned media and rapid response.
  • Coordinate member spokespeople and train the trainers to respond to national and chapter inquiries.
  • Work with national committees to build capacity on comms practices and materials and coordinate messaging between national leaders and committees.
  • Assist with talking points as needed by Comms Director and national leaders.
  • Work with the Comms Director and other Comms staff in drafting and copy-editing relevant written materials, such as press releases.
  • Coordinate media outreach and preparation for national conferences and conventions by inviting journalists, coordinating messaging, and prepping spokespeople.
  • Monitor media through Muck Rack for articles relevant to the organization and chapters.
  • Post approved social media posts, statements, and other external messaging as requested by DSA National leaders.
  • Perform other duties which may arise based on the needs of the organization.

Qualifications

  • Preferred 3 years in a position in comms, preferably with a left organization or union and on a national level.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, experience, and self-motivation working on a comprehensive comms strategy with staff and volunteers or members.
  • Ability to work effectively with member leaders from varying political viewpoints underneath DSA’s big tent.
  • Creativity to produce exciting and interesting content and ability to propose thoughtful and unique communication strategies and projects to national leadership.
  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with a non-traditional leadership structure, adapting to changing political conditions and organizational needs.
  • High level of accountability, responsibility, and dependability.
  • Experience writing and pitching media advisories and press releases.
  • Ability to travel on occasion.
  • Commitment to democratic socialist, feminist, anti-racist, anti-ableist, anti-heterosexist, and pro-worker action, and identify as a socialist and be grounded in democratic socialist politics; general agreement with the positions and perspectives of DSA.
  • Multilingual candidates encouraged, especially Spanish.
  • Experience working in a membership-led organization and/or with member leaders that direct the work (preferred).
