Responsibilities
- Monitor animals during the initial post-operative critical recovery phase, including performing TPRs (temperature, pulse, respiration), auscultation of the heart and lungs, assessing pain at incision sites, changing wound dressings, and administering medications
- Prepare animals for surgery, including anesthetic calculations, sedation and induction, intubation, IV catheter placement, anesthesia monitoring, specimen collections, and surgical site preparation
- Perform and document activities such as monitoring and charting physiological data during surgical prep and recovery, and documenting medication administration
- Dispense medications as prescribed by veterinarian and/or protocol specifications
- Collect lab work, including blood, fecal, and urine samples, and process them as required
- Communicate with veterinary staff, supervisors, and study directors regarding the medical status of animals and their recovery process
- Operate, clean, and maintain gas anesthesia machines, autoclaves, and other surgical equipment
- Maintain an efficient and clean work area by organizing surgical prep and recovery spaces
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) or ALAT certification is preferred
- Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline or Associate of Science in Veterinary Technology required
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to:
- A variety of large and small livestock, domestic and laboratory animals, as well as their blood and body fluids
- Sharps and gases such as CO₂ and isoflurane
- Occasional exposure to fluoroscopy, Bio-Safety-Level 2 (BSL2) environments, wet conditions (non-weather), toxic or caustic chemicals, zoonotic diseases, and rare exposure to faxitron x-ray imaging
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud. Hearing protection is required in designated areas and when performing specific tasks.
Physical demands include:
- Regularly standing, walking, using hands, talking, or hearing
- Frequently reaching with hands and arms, grasping, holding and manipulating equipment, stooping, crouching, and kneeling
- Occasionally sitting, climbing, balancing, or crawling
- Frequently lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 75 pounds with assistance
- Regularly moving up to 250 lbs using mechanical assistance, such as pushing or pulling wheeled tables
- Potential requirement to view computer monitors and stand for extended periods
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, full-color vision, ability to adjust focus, exceptional spatial acuity, and visual-kinesthetic coordination.
Pay
Compensation target: $23.00 per hour. The compensation grade range for this position is $15.24 – $29.57 hourly. Individual base pay depends on factors such as role complexity, job duties, relevant experience, and skills, in addition to primary work location.
