About the role

This is a salaried-exempt position responsible for managing and supervising the day-to-day operation and maintenance of steam and power generation equipment and personnel, including both salaried-exempt and hourly unionized staff, as directed by the Power Generation Manager. The role includes providing periodic on-call coverage for emergency response.

Responsibilities

  • Abide by all Company policies outlined in the Employee Handbook and comply with all Company, local, state, and federal regulations relating to health, safety, and operations.
  • Successfully participate in and complete all required training sessions, safety classes, shift meetings, and certifications, and ensure assigned personnel complete all required training.
  • Monitor and enforce the safety program by conducting regular pre-shift safety meetings, providing identified training, and disciplining violations to maintain a safe working environment and comply with OSHA standards.
  • Supervise and direct the control of proper power plant operations, including steam temperatures, pressures, superheat, and steam quality.
  • Supervise and direct the control of feed-water chemistry, monitoring hardness, alkalinity, pH, chloride, sulfite, phosphate, conductivity, and their operating ranges for safe and efficient boiler operation.
  • Supervise and direct planned and preventative maintenance of all power generation equipment, managing material inventory and assigning repair work using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Ensure proper safe operation of fuel burners, valve trains, stokers, steam traps, feed-water deaerators, and pumps.
  • Ensure environmental permit compliance for all boilers.
  • Use SAP to schedule work assignments, record and approve time, and order materials.
  • Train, coach, and motivate employees to conduct work assignments and accomplish goals in accordance with Operational Excellence and continuous improvement guidelines, considering overall operating costs.
  • Coordinate with outside departments on daily production targets, including steam requirements, weather conditions, maintenance, and other operational issues.
  • Communicate effectively with employees to promote a positive work environment while enforcing Company policies.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have 10 years of applicable steam power plant experience with demonstrated leadership capabilities in operating and maintaining boilers, turbine generators, and associated equipment.
  • Demonstrate operational knowledge of solid fuel boilers, including air requirements, supply and control, dampers, combustion efficiency, excess air control, air pollution constituents, and boiler furnace chemistry.
  • Demonstrate physical ability to perform the essential functions of the job, including working in outdoor environments exposed to heights, extreme temperatures, loud noise, and low lighting while wearing PPE (e.g., hard hat, goggles, ear plugs, full-body suits, respirators).
  • Must be in good health and physically able to perform all phases of the work, including climbing stairs or ladders, kneeling, crawling, bending, stooping, squatting, reaching overhead, and walking on uneven ground with slip and trip hazards.
  • Must be able to read, write, and speak English to comprehend instructions, communicate via radio, interpret policies and procedures, and ensure personal and co-worker safety.
  • New hires must pass a drug test and pre-employment background screening and successfully complete any required training or orientation courses.
  • Internal candidates must have a good work record, positive disciplinary history, and pass Company-designated tests for basic skills, job skills, mechanical aptitude, or other relevant characteristics.

Working Conditions

  • 80% of work is conducted outdoors, exposed to heights, extreme temperatures, flying dust and particles, loud noise, and low lighting while wearing PPE (e.g., hard hat, goggles, ear plugs, full-body suits, respirators). Tasks include working around wet or moving machinery with sharp edges, reaching overhead while crouching, standing, or laying prone, and regularly climbing stairs or ladders.
  • 20% of work is conducted seated in an environmentally controlled building, facing multiple computer screens with flashing lights, using repetitive motions with a computer mouse and keyboard, and routinely taking or receiving verbal instructions in person or over the radio.
  • Occasional exposure to stressful emergency situations requiring tempered, planned responses while directing field staff and collaborating with managers.
