We are seeking a Research Associate to join the SALT Lab within the Department of Radiology & Medical Imaging at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine. The SALT Lab focuses on Sodium, Adipose, and Lymphatic Translational sciences in lymphedema and lipedema, with an emphasis on clinical trials using translational methods.

About the role

The Research Associate will work within a dynamic team to carry out ongoing research and develop an independent research study. Key responsibilities include participant recruitment, coordination of research visits, development and execution of non-MRI bedside procedures, and support for MRI exams. The role involves data quality control, analysis, and authorship of scientific research abstracts and manuscripts.

Ongoing research includes an NIH-funded program, Visualizing Sodium in Lymphatic Disease: A Translational Path (1R35HL184172-01), which aims to study leg lymphedema progression, develop the SALT MRI exam for upper-body imaging in breast cancer-related lymphedema, and explore biological features of lipedema for improved diagnosis.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit and screen participants with and without lipedema and lymphedema from UVA clinics and nationally.
  • Assist in coordinating research visits and develop/perform non-MRI bedside procedures for data collection.
  • Support MRI exams and perform post-visit data quality control and analysis.
  • Author and co-author scientific research abstracts and manuscripts for peer-review.
  • Develop independent research in lymphatic translational sciences, including novel investigations and hypothesis testing.
  • Execute study designs, pursue grant funding, and fulfill regulatory and ethics requirements.
  • Engage in career development through training, conferences, and advancement opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field.

Work Environment

This is primarily a sedentary role involving extensive desktop computer use, with occasional travel for meetings and programs. The position is a 12-month appointment with the possibility of renewal for up to two additional one-year increments, contingent on performance and funding availability.

Postdoctoral employment is typically limited to individuals who have earned a doctoral degree within the previous five years. The role is based in Charlottesville, VA, and must be performed fully on-site.
