Pool Milieu Counselor, Detox

About the Role

The Residential Counselor (Milieu Counselor) provides milieu management, guidance, safety, stability, and direction to clients who are actively intoxicated and/or experiencing withdrawal symptoms. This is a pool (on-call) position with no set schedule.

Responsibilities

• Assess and document levels of intoxication, including breath alcohol levels, withdrawal symptoms, vital signs, physical condition, mental status, and behavior.
• Identify signs of an emergency and react appropriately, ensuring Adverse Incident Reporting (AIR) procedures are followed during shift.
• Monitor the milieu to ensure safety and meet client needs, including cleaning/organizing shared spaces, restocking supplies, and securing doors and windows.
• Facilitate and co-facilitate psychoeducation groups on the unit with clients.
• Respond to client needs and problems, engage clients in discussions to identify goals, build rapport, and provide referrals to supportive services when needed.
• Serve as Acting Shift Coordinator when coverage is needed (pay differential provided).
• Practice OSHA safety standards and dispose of biohazard waste according to OSHA standards.
• Transport clients to and from hospitals, aftercare, or other approved services as directed by the Shift Coordinator, adhering to transportation safety guidelines.
• Conduct community outreach and engagement offsite, as needed.
• Assist in maintaining outreach vans and report any vehicle accidents, damage, or needed maintenance.
• Adhere to all Withdrawal Management and Jefferson Center Policies and Procedures.
• Participate in supervision by preparing an agenda, reporting high-risk/problem cases, utilizing a problem-solving approach, and integrating feedback.
• Perform accurate and timely documentation at all times.
• Adhere to Corporate Compliance requirements in accordance with regulatory requirements and clinical guidelines.
• Exhibit enthusiasm, courtesy, adaptability, flexibility, and a spirit of cooperation in the work environment.
• Maintain effective interpersonal relations with consumers, peers, upper management, visitors, and the general public, using language and behavior that promotes dignity and respect.
• Demonstrate cultural competence in working with clients from diverse backgrounds and develop therapeutic alliances with patients.
• Participate in staff development activities to enhance professional growth.
• Prioritize responsibilities and manage time independently.
• Address the whole health needs of clients by ensuring appropriate releases are in place for other providers and making referrals as needed.
• Understand how trauma impacts clients and ensure interactions are consistent with the recovery process to reduce re-traumatization.
• Ensure delivery practices are guided by the principles of trauma-informed care and addiction treatment.

Requirements

• Minimum of a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field (preferred).
• Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS) or ability to obtain CAS within 18 months of hire.
• QMAP certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
• Current CPR/First Aid Certification or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
• Motor Vehicle Insurance Coverage; must be 25 years or older.
• Acceptable Motor Vehicle Driving record as determined by our insurance carrier (MVR will be pulled along with a background check).

Pay

$26 - $36 per hour, depending on education level and shift worked.
