Schedule: 4 ten-hour shifts (8:30 PM to 6:30 AM). Some weekends and holidays required. Hours may vary during training.

About the role

The Registered Polysomnography Technician (RPSGT) performs a wide variety of sleep diagnostic and therapeutic services following departmental policies. The technician supports healthcare team members by assisting with patient transport, positioning, and movement. Additional duties include answering phones, cleaning equipment, managing supplies, initiating paperwork, retrieving records, electrode and sensor placement, and room turnover. Candidates currently training toward RPSGT certification will also be considered.

The Polysomnography Technician in Training is an entry-level role focused on learning to conduct, monitor, and analyze overnight sleep studies under supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Identify physical, social, and psychological needs of patients and their families as part of patient assessment.
  • Establish priorities of care and provide necessary patient care.
  • Document concise narrative notes reflecting patient responses to care.
  • Transcribe and implement physician’s orders accurately; compile and forward test results to physicians.
  • Follow policies, procedures, protocols, and standards of care for the Sleep Disorders Center.
  • Comply with AASM continuing education requirements.
  • Score Home Sleep Studies per AASM guidelines.
  • Monitor inventory and order supplies as needed.
  • Enter charges for Sleep Studies.
  • Check email, EPIC in-basket, and EPIC work queues daily.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations, including airway management, AED placement, and CPR.
  • Initiate, monitor, and manage CPAP/BiPAP titration per department policy.
  • Accurately measure and place electrodes and sensors for testing.
  • Set up and manage oxygen during testing per department policy.
  • Distinguish artifact potentials from true cerebral potentials and eliminate artifacts as needed.
  • Monitor patient feedback and suggest modifications based on input.

Requirements

For Registered Polysomnography Technician (RPSGT): After meeting AASM qualifications, full-time employees have one year to obtain RPSGT certification. The following credentials qualify candidates for the RPSGT exam under Pathway 2 training:

  • Nursing (LPN, RN)
  • Respiratory Care (RRT, CRT)
  • Electroneurodiagnostic (R EEG T, R EP T, CNIM)
  • Paramedic (EMT-P)
  • Radiology (RT, RT (R), RT(CT), RT (BD), RT (NI))
  • Certified Hyperbaric Technologist (CHT)
  • Certified Nuclear Medicine Technician (CNMT)
  • Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT)
  • Registered Cardiac Sonographer (RCS)
  • Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS)
  • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS)
  • Certified Athletic Trainer (AT)
  • Medical Technologist (MT)
  • Certified Rhythm Analysis Technician (RAT)
  • Registered Vascular Technician (RVT)
  • Certified Pulmonary Function Technician (CPFT)
  • Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist (RCEP)
  • Registered Pulmonary Function Technician (RPFT)
  • Certified Surgical Assistant (CSA)

For Polysomnography Technician in Training:

  • After meeting AASM qualifications, full-time employees have one year to obtain RPSGT certification.
  • Preferred: 18 months of medical experience in a healthcare setting.

Qualifications

  • Licensure in the State of Indiana as a Respiratory Care Practitioner preferred.
  • Licensure in any healthcare field preferred.
  • Current certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
  • For Pathway #2: Submit a copy of the qualifying credential.
