Polysomnographic Technologist

About the Role

The Registered Polysomnographic Technologist is responsible for providing comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders, including polysomnography, diagnostic or therapeutic services, patient care, and education, meeting standards set by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).

Responsibilities

• Prepares and calibrates testing equipment, prepares patients for testing, and establishes/document baseline values.
• Performs polysomnographic testing procedures (MSLT, MWT, parasomnia studies, PAP, oxygen titration, etc.) to ensure quality data acquisition.
• Documents routine observations, including sleep stages, clinical events, changes in procedures, and other significant events to facilitate scoring and interpretation of results.
• Implements interventions to ensure patient safety and modifies procedures within center standards.
• Accurately completes pre-testing, testing, and post-procedure documentation.
• Scores sleep/wake stages and clinical events (respiratory, cardiac, limb movement, arousal, etc.) using professionally accepted guidelines.
• Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical data events, ensuring compliance with AASM Inter-scorer reliability QA Program’s (ISR) Gold Standard (85% accuracy).
• Establishes rapport with patients and ensures timely communication of pertinent clinical information to healthcare team members.
• Collaborates internally and externally to provide an optimal patient experience.
• Assists in collection, collation, and reporting of performance data to ensure regulatory compliance and AASM standards.
• Coordinates and facilitates patient/family education and promotes center/program development through outreach.
• Oversees and performs complex procedures and therapeutic interventions while maintaining equipment and troubleshooting issues.

Requirements

• Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree preferred, with an emphasis in polysomnography. Alternative polysomnography program (minimum 1 year) from a state-licensed or nationally accredited educational facility may be considered with equivalent experience.
• Certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) required.
• Two (2) years of experience in a full-service sleep center preferred.
• Effective communication skills.
• BLS – Healthcare Provider certification required.
• ACLS preferred.
• Proficiency in the principles of polysomnography and electroencephalography.
