About the Role

The City of Richmond Police Department is accepting applications for Police Officer - Retiree. This is an exciting opportunity to rejoin the force with enhanced employee benefits and contribute to the community.

Requirements

• Must have retired from RPD
• Retirement must have been in the last 5 years or still hold a current DCJS certification
• If still employed with RPD, must complete the DROP program before becoming eligible
• Must be separated from the department for at least one pay cycle

Assignments

If returning in a full-time role, you will be assigned in a patrol capacity within the Department.

Responsibilities

• Patrolling assigned city jurisdiction for traffic and other violations utilizing a variety of means of transportation including patrol car, motorcycle, bicycle, and horse
• Making traffic stops and intervening in other criminal activity
• Conducting general field services, including monitoring police radio and responding to citizen calls and complaints
• Obtaining and issuing warrants
• Marking and packaging evidence
• Processing crime scenes
• Investigating potential arson cases
• Providing surveillance
• Interviewing suspects and witnesses, and following-up with victims
• Fingerprinting and photographing suspects
• Conducting computer-generated searches to gather information on suspects
• Preparing for and participating in prosecution of cases in court
• Interacting with City and community agencies and groups
• Responding to citizen calls, complaints, and requests for information
• Maintaining case files, data, and preparing regular reports
• Other duties as assigned when needed

• Salary step placement based on years of service (e.g., 25 years = step 25, 27+ years = step 27)
• Eligibility to work off-duty and overtime after 9 months

• Monthly retirement benefits pause upon rehire and resume upon subsequent retirement
• For sworn employees, option to elect the same or a different retirement plan/option upon rehire; additional service and salary used in recalculation of prior pension if same defined benefit plan is elected
• For general employees rehired after 6/2006, previous monthly retirement payment resumes upon termination, but no recalculation; benefits earned during re-employment paid via Defined Contribution Plan

• Eligibility to earn vacation and sick time (accrual starts at 0 hours, crediting rate same as a new employee)

Qualifications and Training

• Rehired employees will complete Reentry or a modified Basic Training Class with the Training Academy prior to assignment
• Certified Officers will complete 8 weeks of Field Training
• Must maintain all applicable RPD and DCJS mandated training and certifications

Physical and Dexterity Requirements

• Requires medium to heavy work involving walking, standing, stooping, lifting, digging, pushing, and raising objects
• Exerting between 20 to 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis, and 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally

Environmental Hazards

• Exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels
• Risk of exposure to animals/wildlife, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, heights, disease/pathogens, explosives, and violence

Sensory Requirements

• Requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception
