Police Officer Trainee

About the role

This is an open recruitment for Police Officer Trainee positions in the City of Hollister Police Department. Applications will be accepted continuously until a sufficient number of qualified applicants have been received or until positions are filled.

Responsibilities

• Learn about police patrol activities while accompanying a police officer in a patrol unit.
• Aid police officers in answering calls for the protection of life and property, and enforcing all laws.
• Assist in the investigations of disturbances, burglaries, thefts, death cases, and other criminal incidents.
• Prepare police emergency or other traffic situations.
• Report street lamps or traffic signals that are not working properly, and assist with the removal of traffic hazards.
• Administer first aid or perform CPR.
• Contact citizens regarding the maintenance of law and order and the reporting of criminal activity.
• Wear a distinctive police uniform and make contact with the public while on police patrol or while assigned to the public counter area.
• Answer inquiries and give clear, accurate information to the public concerning police procedures and matters.
• Police Officer Trainees may be assigned to assist investigators in the handling of criminal cases. Duties might include assisting with the collection of evidence at a crime scene, assisting with obtaining witnesses statements, performing commuter tasks to gather information and record information.

Requirements

• Must be at least 20.5 years of age and pass an extensive background process.
• Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
• A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: None required.
• Education: Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
• Licenses/Certificates: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver’s license.
• Must be at least 20.5 years of age at time of testing and at least 21 years of age at time of appointment to sworn peace officer.
• Not have any felony convictions.
• Be able to pass a comprehensive background.
• Be a United States citizen or have permanent resident alien status and applied for citizenship.
• Mental Evaluation: Peace officers will be evaluated by a doctor and must be found to be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.
• Knowledge: Geography of the local area, first aid principles, practices and techniques, self-defense tactics, interviewing and interrogation techniques.
• Ability: Attend, fully participate in, successfully complete and graduate from a California P.O.S.T. approved basic police academy.
• Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places.
• Learn to interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
• Prepare clear, accurate and grammatically correct written reports.
• Learn to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine and take emergency action.
• Identify potential crime situations or traffic hazards and take preventive action.
• Meet the first aid requirement as prescribed by the State of California and to administer first aid.
• Learn the operation of standard equipment and facilities required in the performance of assigned tasks.
• Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Qualifications

• Experience: At least 20.5 years of age and pass an extensive background process.
• Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Licenses/Certificates: Valid California driver’s license.
• Background: No felony convictions, pass a comprehensive background.
• Citizenship: US citizen or permanent resident alien with citizenship application.
• Mental Health: Free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition affecting the exercise of peace officer powers.
• Knowledge: Geography, first aid principles, self-defense tactics, interviewing and interrogation techniques.
• Skills: Attend, participate, graduate from P.O.S.T. academy, perform related learning activities, prepare clear reports, analyze situations, identify hazards, administer first aid, operate equipment.
• Physical: Meet physical requirements for assigned duties.
• Communication: Clear, concise, both oral and written.
• Work Relationships: Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Benefits

The City of Hollister offers a recruitment bonus of either $25,000 or $30,000 upon successful completion of the P.O.S.T. Academy and being sworn in as a Police Officer with the City of Hollister Police Department. The bonus is paid out as specified in the HPOA MOU.

Pay

The starting salary for this position is $37,000 per year.

Schedule

The Police Officer Trainee position is part-time and will be scheduled based on departmental needs.
