Police Officer Trainee
Limited-term full-time position while attending a P.O.S.T.-certified basic police academy. Appointee(s) will attend the academy during regular academy hours and all scheduled departmental and academy exercises and activities. Successful completion of the academy is required to continue employment and be promoted to Police Officer.
About the role
To perform sworn law enforcement and crime prevention duties involved in the protection of life and property; and to perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of law enforcement services and activities.
This is the entry-level class in the Police Officer series. Positions in this class typically have little or no directly related work experience and work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks. The Police Officer Trainee class is distinguished from the Police Officer level by the performance of less than the full range of duties assigned to the Officer level. Incumbents work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks, progressing to general supervision as procedures and processes of assigned area of responsibility are learned.
Selection process
Applicants selected to participate in the Police Department's testing process will partake in the following:
- PELLET-B Written Examination measures job-related knowledge and abilities. Examination Date: Thursday, August 20, 2026. If you have a PELLETB score, please attach to your application. Minimum acceptable t-score cut-off for the PELLETB is 50 (fifty) within the past year of your application date.
- Performance Test evaluates ability to physically perform the duties of position. Agility Test Date: Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
- Oral Interview evaluates training, experience, and personal qualifications. Tentative Interview Dates: September 7 - September 9, 2026. Interview dates are subject to change, dependent on number of candidates advancing to the interview step.
- Background Investigation: Candidates who have successfully completed all prior phases of the selection process will be subject to a thorough background investigation to determine moral character and suitability for employment in law enforcement. The investigation shall include, but is not limited to, the following checks: criminal record, polygraph, driving history, credit history, military record, previous employer(s), and references.
- Medical Examination: Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully complete a thorough medical examination, including a drug screen, to determine if they meet the City's medical standards for the position of Police Officer.
- Psychological Evaluation: Prior to appointment, candidates will be evaluated for their suitability for employment as a Roseville Police Officer.
Requirements
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, GED, or other high school equivalency test approved by the California Department of Education or a higher level degree from an accredited educational institution.
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.
- Must be age 21 by date of appointment.
- Must obtain CPR and First Aid certificates within first 12 months of employment.
The City of Roseville defines “accredited college or university” as an institution of higher learning listed on the United States Department of Education Database of Accredited Post-Secondary Institutions and Programs website. Credits earned from accredited institutions will be considered as part of the educational component of the minimum qualifications. Educational background from a foreign country may be evaluated by an accredited U.S. college or university or through foreign education credential evaluation services (member agencies listed at www.naces.org or www.aice-eval.org).
