About the role

The City of Santa Cruz is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Police Officer Trainee. This role is designed for individuals who are eager to join a department renowned for its innovative community-based policing strategies.

Responsibilities

  • Attend an approved Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) basic police academy to be trained in the technical knowledge, skills, and physical capabilities required to perform police service.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Completion and submission of passing POST PELLETB results with a score of 46 or higher.
  • Completion and submission of a California POST physical agility certificate (WSTB) with a score of 384 or higher and completion of a 1.5 mile run in 15-minute maximum time.

Pay

  • Salary for Police Officer Trainees is $6,952 per month.
  • Starting salary for sworn Police Officers is $8,248 per month.

Schedule

  • Continuous application screening.
  • Oral interview panel.
  • Background investigation and polygraph examination.
  • Psychological examination.
  • Medical examination (including drug/alcohol screening).

Pay Incentives

  • Hiring bonus of up to $10,000.
  • Education bonus of $2,500 for AA or AS degrees, and $5,000 for BA or BS degrees.
  • Tuition reimbursement up to $500 per fiscal year.
  • Bilingual pay of 5% differential of base pay.

Background Investigation and Polygraph Test

  • Intensive background investigation.
  • Required to pass a polygraph test administered by a licensed polygrapher.
  • Psychological exam given by a City-selected psychologist.
  • Medical exam by a City physician (including a stress test EKG and general physical examination).

Pre-Employment Policy Regarding Illegal Use or Possession of Drugs

  • Disqualification for certain types of drug use or possession.

Driver's License Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license.
