About the role

The Police Officer Trainee position is a non-sworn member of the Campbell Police Department who will attend a POST-Certified Basic Police Academy. Upon graduation, the Trainee will be sworn in as a Police Officer and serve a 18-month probationary period. Monthly salary increases to the first step of the Police Officer salary range upon appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Attend and successfully complete a POST Basic Police Academy
  • Pass all required classes at the academy
  • Ride on patrol as an observer
  • Perform other non-sworn duties as required
  • Enforce federal, state, and municipal laws and ordinances
  • Perform patrol duties in various modes of transportation
  • Respond to calls for service and protect life and property
  • Afford arrests as required and testify in court
  • Engage in crime prevention and community relations activities
  • Interact with all city departments to ensure optimal service to the community
  • Prepare and maintain departmental reports
  • Maintain and service departmental equipment

Qualifications

  • Completion of 40 semester units or 60 quarter units from an accredited college or university (units must be completed at time of application)
  • Successfully complete and graduate from POST Basic Police Academy within six months from date of hire (providing 21 additional college-level units)
  • No prior experience necessary
  • Ability to learn laws of arrest and pertinent local, state, and other laws
  • Reasonably interpret the technical concepts of law
  • Use and care for firearms
  • Observe and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places accurately
  • Work without exacting supervision
  • Operate a police mobile and portable radio
  • Prepare accurate police reports

Additional Requirements

  • Valid California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record
  • Likely authorized to work in the United States under Federal Law
  • At least 20.5 years of age at the date of application and 21 by date of appointment
  • Physical capacity to meet standards established by the City of Campbell
  • At least 20/40 uncorrected vision accessed for both eyes together
  • Meet POST physical standards

  • Campbell Peace Officers' Association (CPOA) Retirement: CalPERS - Formula dependent on hire date and member status in CalPERS
  • Health Insurance: Effective January 1, 2024, the monthly Cafeteria Plan Allowance will be based on selected level of coverage, as follows: Employee Only Coverage: $986.84; Employee Plus One Coverage: $1,973.68, Employee Plus Family: $2,565.78 to use towards a CalPERS medical plan or cash out opt: $750/month
  • Vision/Dental Insurance: The City pays the monthly premium for employees and their eligible dependents through VSP and Delta Dental
  • Deferred Compensation: City contributes $20 per pay period Mission Square Retirement 457 Plan available
  • Bilingual Pay: $100 if eligible
