Police Officer/Public Safety Officer III - Full Time

About the Role

Cross-trained position providing Police, Fire, and EMS Services to the community. MCOLES License or ability to activate MCOLES license required. Will provide fire and EMS training to the right candidate. This position is eligible for the lateral bonus program based on current MCOLES and/or Fire I/II certifications, which includes the potential for higher starting pay, PTO, and a monetary bonus.

Responsibilities

• Provide a sense of security for businesses and citizens.
• Enforce local ordinances and state laws.
• Respond to all calls for service, including reports of criminal offenses.
• Affect arrests, forcibly if necessary, using handcuffs and other restraints.
• Navigate physical obstacles such as climbing, jumping, crawling, and using ladders during pursuits, searches, investigations, or rescues.
• Perform tasks requiring lifting, carrying, or dragging people or heavy objects during arrests, rescues, or general patrol.
• Communicate effectively over law enforcement and fire radio frequencies, including under adverse conditions.
• Conduct verbal communication, including listening, giving directions, and issuing commands.
• Perform searches of buildings and large outdoor areas, which may involve prolonged standing or walking and require distinguishing colors and shapes.
• Conduct visual and audio surveillance for extended periods.
• Enter and exit vehicles quickly for rescue operations, pursuits, or emergency responses.
• Exercise independent judgment within legal guidelines to determine reasonable suspicion, probable cause, and appropriate use of force.
• Gather information and file reports by interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants.
• Load, unload, aim, and fire agency firearms in situations justifying deadly force while maintaining emotional control under extreme stress.
• Manage interpersonal conflicts to maintain order.
• Operate emergency vehicles in various conditions, including high speeds, adverse weather, and congested traffic.
• Perform law enforcement patrol functions on rotating shifts and unanticipated overtime.
• Conduct searches of persons to detect potential weapons and contraband.
• Prepare investigative and other reports using appropriate grammar, symbols, and computations.
• Pursue fleeing suspects on foot, day or night, in unfamiliar terrain.
• Read and comprehend rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and laws to ensure appropriate officer behavior and enforcement activities.
• Subdue resisting subjects using hands, feet, defensive tactics, or approved nonlethal weapons.
• Use body force to gain entrance through barriers for searches, seizures, investigations, or rescues.
• Perform other essential tests as identified by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards Job-Task Analysis.
• Extinguish uncontrolled fires in residential, commercial, and industrial occupancies.
• Perform fire suppression, search and rescue, ventilation, and extrication tasks requiring lifting, carrying, or dragging people or heavy objects.
• Enter and exit fire apparatus quickly in response to emergency calls.
• Conduct public fire education activities, such as informational talks, open houses, and school tours.
• Maintain fire equipment and personal protective equipment in a state of readiness.
• Establish and maintain comprehensive files, records, and documentation, including entering information into computer systems and preparing reports.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree (preferred).
• Licensed through the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Candidates without this license may be considered but must obtain it after hire.
• Certification as a Firefighter I and II in accordance with Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council standards. Candidates without these certifications may be considered but must obtain them after hire.
• Medical First Responder certification. Candidates without this certification may be considered but must obtain it after hire.
• Valid Michigan driver’s license.
