About the role
Under the direction of assigned supervisor, perform law enforcement duties and other services to safeguard the lives, property and constitutional rights of the citizens of Lewiston; respond to crime and accident scenes, emergency situations and other requests for assistance; detect, apprehend and arrest criminals; enforce the laws and ordinances of the City; perform a variety of specialized duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Respond to a wide variety of calls from citizens in need of first aid, information and general assistance.
- Provide first aid and rescue services at crime scenes, accidents and other emergency situations.
- Communicate with other City personnel, law enforcement agencies and health care providers to coordinate efforts, resolve problems and exchange information.
- Prepare accurate and detailed investigative reports; complete a variety of forms and issue citations as appropriate.
- Utilize and maintain a variety of specialized equipment such as firearms, police vehicles, radios, baton, handcuffs, flares and other according to established procedures.
- Drive patrol vehicle in an assigned area, observing for conditions and activities in which there appears to be potential or actual harm to persons or property, disruption of public order, or any other violations of law.
- Respond to observed or reported suspected or actual harmful or illegal conditions or activities or resulting from an investigation and taking appropriate action required for preventing, subduing or alleviating such conditions or activities; Apprehend traffic violators, issuing citations, warning and testing and booking offenders; apprehend and arrest persons suspected or convicted of committing crimes.
Requirements
- Minimum Qualifications: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school or GED.
- Qualification for Basic Certification through Idaho Peace Officer Standards and Training Council; Basic POST Certification within twelve (12) months of employment.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Successful completion of physical examination.
Specific Disqualifiers/Behaviors
- Felony, Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: Conviction or withheld judgement on any felony offense.
- Criminal Activity Disqualifiers: Convictions or withheld judgments for any misdemeanor sex crimes, DUI, domestic violence, stalking, civil protection order violation or child abuse.
- Driving Disqualifiers: Misdemeanor traffic violations within five years of application.
- Drug Use Disqualifiers: Violations of the Lewiston Police Department Drug Policy or failure to meet IDAPA rules for drug use, 11.11.01.055 as of March 20, 2014.
