Responsibilities
- Emergency Response: Responds appropriately and in a timely manner to emergency situations, activated security and panic alarms, and participates as a functioning part of the Emergency Response Team to provide or prevent access to involved areas. Maintains a working knowledge of emergency codes and UNC Hospitals Police response procedures.
- Conflict Resolution: Mediates and resolves conflicts or disturbances involving patients, visitors, or staff using de-escalation techniques. Assists with mental health patient custody issues and arranges transportation to other facilities as needed.
- Community Policing: Protects and serves hospital staff, patients, and visitors through law enforcement and crime prevention. Patrols campuses, investigates complaints and violations of state laws and local ordinances using the Community Oriented Policing philosophy. Develops and implements preventative patrol techniques to deter crime and promote safety.
- Investigations and Incident Report Writing: Enters incident reports into the Police-Pak system completely and concisely. Investigates and documents criminal incidents, including follow-up investigations, arrests, and felony prosecution reports. Submits paperwork in a timely manner and runs criminal history checks using NCIC/DCI/CJLeads/NCAWARE. Takes custody of found items, secures evidence, and initiates risk assessments as required.
- Patrol and Surveillance: Patrols assigned areas to detect and deter criminal activity. Documents and reports security or safety hazards. Escorts employees, patients, and visitors to parking areas. Provides after-hours access to secured areas for authorized personnel. Collects, inventories, and secures patient property and commitment documents.
- Policy and Procedures/General Statutes: Maintains familiarity with departmental and hospital policies, including the Departmental Policy Manual, Hospital Administrative Policy Manual, Environmental Health and Safety Policy Manual, and Human Resources Policy Manual. Applies knowledge of Federal and N.C. criminal statutes, probable cause, and Use of Force Policy in the performance of duties.
- Special Areas of Responsibility: Proactively manages specific assigned areas including security-sensitive area management, light surveys, airway box surveys, panic alarm inspections, access control inspections, and special events coordination.
- Community Engagement: Builds positive relationships with hospital staff, patients, and visitors to enhance their sense of security and well-being.
- Traffic Control: Conducts parking surveys, enforces applicable parking regulations, writes citations for illegally parked or unauthorized vehicles, and initiates towing as required.
Requirements
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s license.
- Must have completed North Carolina’s Basic Law Enforcement Training and hold at least a general certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission (NC CJETSC).
- Out-of-state candidates must have successfully completed a Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) course accredited by their state of transfer and must not have a break in service exceeding one year. Must complete a minimum of 56 hours of additional training and pass the state exam to be eligible for NC certification.
- Must successfully pass an in-depth background investigation, including review of driving and criminal history (no felony convictions), psychological testing, polygraph examination, drug screening, and physical examination.
- Must qualify with a passing score on the department’s duty weapon qualification course of fire.
- Minimum of 2 years experience as a certified Law Enforcement Officer.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to work a shift from 5:50 AM to 5:50 PM or 5:50 PM to 5:50 AM; shifts may be changed to meet department needs.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with the public and criminal justice representatives.
- Ability to write a computer-generated report using a computerized form based on a provided fact scenario, with a passing score of 70% based on content, grammar, and spelling.
- Adherence to moral and ethical principles with sound moral character and honesty.
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team or independently with minimal supervision.
- Reliability, dependability, and sound judgment in decision-making.
- Ability to apply laws, ordinances, and departmental policies to a broad range of circumstances.
Pay
Salary range: $24.98 – $35.91 per hour (Hiring range). Pay offers are determined by experience and internal equity.
Schedule
Full-time, 40 standard hours per week. Variable schedule with shifts from 5:50 AM to 5:50 PM or 5:50 PM to 5:50 AM. Hybrid work arrangement.
