About the role

The Police Officer Certified/Certifiable position protects and serves the citizens and communities of the City of Lansing. Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of duties involving the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; controls traffic flow and enforces state and local traffic regulations; issues citations; participates in and conducts a variety of criminal investigations; makes arrests; provides support and assistance to special crime prevention and law enforcement programs; and performs a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of law enforcement services and activities.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED AND an Associate Degree (preferred)
  • Completion of 24 semester credit (or term equivalency) hours of college level coursework
  • 2 years of experience at a Law Enforcement Agency (certified officer)
  • Current Military Commitment in Good Standing
  • Completion of Commitment to the military in Good Standing
  • Prior law enforcement experience and a lapse in certification requires proof of re-certification
  • Out of State certified applicants must pass MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience (RPTE) program or testing
  • Military Course Credits may be used for equivalency
  • Available to work 10 hour shifts including nights, weekends, holidays, and various overtime assignments
  • Good moral character as determined by a background investigation
  • Honorably discharged USA Armed Forces Veteran (DD-214 must be included in application packet)
  • US Citizen at time of job offer
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record
  • Pass a background investigation
  • Meet physical standards as determined by the City's Medical Doctor

Qualifications

  • Must be available to work 10 hour shifts to include nights, weekends, holidays and various overtime assignments
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
  • Must have good moral character as determined by a background investigation
  • Must be a US Citizen at time of job offer
  • No pending or past felony convictions
  • Must meet physical standards as determined by the City's Medical Doctor

Benefits

  • Sick time: 12 days annually (96 hours)
  • Vacation time: 1-5 years: 96 hours; 5-10 years: 104 hours; 10-15 years: 136 hours; 15-20 years: 176 hours; 20+ years: 192 hours
  • Compensatory time: 1.5 hours for each overtime hour. Maximum accrual 120 hours
  • Holidays: 13 paid Holidays per year
  • Bereavement: 5 days paid for death of immediate family member/spouse’s family member. 1 day paid for non-immediate family members

Pay

Current salary: $56,629.41 - $80,933.42, maximum pay reached in 5 years.

Lateral starting salary: Increased starting salary up to Step 4 based on prior police, military, and/or specialized training.

Step 2: $60,912.94
Step 3: $65,640.36
Step 4: $70,336.24

Vest bonus: $1,000 annually in addition to salary.

Longevity: Annual payments per years of service:

  • 5-10 years: $400
  • 10-15 years: $800
  • 15-20 years: $1,200
  • 20+ years: $1,600

Clothing allowance: 2% or 4% pay increase based on certain assignments.

Shift differential: Increased pay for working noon or night shifts.

Schedule

Officers bid for their work schedules every 6 weeks. 10-hour shifts (Patrol).

Healthcare Coverage

  • Health Insurance: Coverage under either Blue Cross Blue Shield or PHP.
  • Vision: Blue Cross/Blue Shield VSP.
  • Dental Insurance: No premium, coverage includes employee and family, $1,200 maximum for Class I, II, & III benefits and $3,000 orthodontic maximum.
  • Midwestern Dental Plan: Coverage includes 100% coverage for cleaning, oral exams, and biannual x-rays. Other services with co-payments.
