About the role

The Orleans Levee District's jurisdictional area falls under the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) and includes East Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard parishes on the East Bank. The Orleans Levee District Police Department is responsible for patrolling and inspecting levees and floodwalls, ensuring the integrity of the levee system, and protecting lives and property.

Responsibilities

• Patrols and inspects 107 miles of earthen levees and floodwalls, 1400 acres of levee turn maintenance area, 200 land-based floodgates and 6 navigational floodgates, 3 permanent canal closures and pumps, and various valves along the levee system.
• Participates in large-scale crowd control on the Lakefront during peak season and assists the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) with crowd control during Mardi Gras.
• Provides security for SLFPA-E’s emergency repair/maintenance and repair crews during hurricane or other events that could lead to flooding.
• Aids other law enforcement entities, including the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Department, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the FBI, the Secret Service, the DEA, the US Coast Guard, the US Customs Department, and the Department of Immigration and Naturalization.
• Escorts SLFPA-E staff, trucks and equipment to other parishes requiring assistance with flood protection or levee repair/reinforcement.
• Assists other law enforcement departments in detaining aircraft arriving at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport.

Requirements

No experience or training is required. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, possess a current Louisiana driver's license, and be willing and able to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification. Applicants who have been convicted of a felony or who are under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include possession of a current Louisiana driver's license and willingness and ability to attain a POST certification. Applicants must also meet all necessary special requirements, including being at least 18 years of age.

Skills

Must be able to perform law enforcement duties, including crime prevention, crime and accident investigation, and emergency services. Must be able to patrol assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle, inspect levees and flood structures, and provide security and support to SLFPA-E staff and equipment.
