Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational, and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this by working with local, regional, state, and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain projects that reduce the probability and risk of flooding for residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.

About the role

The Orleans Levee District jurisdictional area falls under the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) and includes East Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard parishes on the East Bank. The Orleans Levee District Police Department patrols and inspects levees and floodwalls surrounding Orleans Parish, checks gauges and flood structures to ensure system integrity, protects lives and property, and enforces federal, state, and local laws through active mobile and/or foot patrols. This position performs responsible, commissioned law enforcement duties while armed and uniformed, under the supervision of a higher-level police official.

Responsibilities

• Protects life and property, with an emphasis on law enforcement, crime prevention, crime and accident investigation, and arranging emergency services.
• Patrols an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle to detect and prevent crime.
• Inspects and reports on the condition of 107 miles of earthen levees and floodwalls, 1,400 acres of levee turn maintenance area, 200 land-based floodgates, 6 navigational floodgates, 3 permanent canal closures and pumps, and various valves along the levee system.
• Participates in large-scale crowd control on the Lakefront during peak season and assists the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) with crowd control during Mardi Gras.
• Provides backup to NOPD in other law enforcement activities as requested.
• Escorts SLFPA-E staff, trucks, and equipment to other parishes requiring assistance with flood protection or levee repair/reinforcement.
• Provides security for SLFPA-E’s emergency repair/maintenance crews during hurricanes or other flooding events, ensuring only authorized individuals access such areas.
• Assists other law enforcement entities, including the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Department, Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, FBI, Secret Service, DEA, US Coast Guard, US Customs Department, and Department of Immigration and Naturalization.
• Assists in detaining aircraft arriving at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport when requested.

Requirements

• One year of law enforcement experience.
• Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university substitutes for one year of the required experience.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Possession of a current Louisiana driver’s license.
• Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.
• Applicants convicted of a felony or under indictment on a felony charge are disqualified until relief from disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

This position may be filled as a Police Officer 2 or 3. The appointment type can be Probationary, Promotional, Lateral Transfer, Detail to Special Duty, or Job Appointment.

Schedule

The Orleans Levee District is an emergency-oriented agency. During Mississippi River flooding, hurricanes, tropical storms, or other events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if required, remaining until released by the Appointing Authority.
