Police/Law Enforcement Officer
About the role
The New College of Florida Police Department provides a full range of police services to the New College of Florida and University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee campus community. The Campus Police Department is a 24/7/365 agency with primary jurisdiction on and around the university campuses.
Responsibilities
- Patrols assigned area in radio car
- Checks doors, windows and premises of unoccupied buildings or residences in order to detect suspicious conditions
- Conducts or assists in investigations of suspicious conditions, complaints or criminal activity
- Makes arrests, issues violation tickets, warnings, etc. in regard to traffic enforcement
- Directs traffic, controls crowds, stands for extended periods of time
- Exposes to extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain and potentially dangerous environments
- Performs other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943, Florida Statutes
- Be certifiable as a law enforcement officer in Florida
- Have one year of law enforcement experience
- Military or other appropriate experience may substitute for the required law enforcement experience
- Appropriate college work or vocational/technical training may substitute for the required experience
- Will obtain 911 telecommunications certification by second year of employment
Qualifications
- Preference will be given to applicants with 60 or more semester hours of college coursework from an accredited college or university
- U.S. military personnel with two years of active service
- Certified sworn law enforcement officers with one year or more of experience
Skills
Successful completion of the following:
- Post-offer employment physical to include drug screen, psychological test, polygraph, background investigation, fingerprinting and valid Florida driver’s license

Pay
Salary Additives Are Provided To Sworn Members Selected For Special Assignments Requiring Class Or Certification. The Following Additional Compensation Schedule Will Apply, Up To a Maximum Of Four Special Assignments
- Field Training Officer, add $1.20 to base hourly rate
- FDEL High Liability Instructor, add $1.20 to base hourly rate
- Evidence and Property, add $0.72 to base hourly rate
- Special Teams, add $0.72 to base hourly rate
- Critical Incident Response Team, add $0.72 to base hourly rate
- Peer Support, add $0.72 to base hourly rate
Schedule
Some shift work required as well as some nights, weekends, and/or holidays.
