About the Role

The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, is seeking a Law Enforcement Officer I in the Public Safety office. This role enforces laws, ordinances, and regulations to ensure the security of personnel and property. The officer exercises independent judgment to make immediate decisions, responds to campus emergencies, and supports the senior Public Safety official on campus.

Responsibilities

• Enforce laws, ordinances, and regulations on campus.
• Secure personnel, property, keys, monies, evidence, and firearms.
• Monitor departmental radio and battery status.
• Assume law enforcement and security responsibilities during potentially volatile situations.
• Maintain physical fitness to perform police duties, including standing for extended periods and non-notice recall for emergencies or special events.
• Make on-the-spot evaluations and initiate corrective actions to secure Citadel facilities and U.S. Government property.
• Assist with criminal, accident, and incident investigations.
• Maintain confidentiality and a close working relationship with Public Safety command staff.
• Engage in public contact work, exercising initiative, independent judgment, and discretion in dealing with visitors and general public relations.
• Stay informed of local, state, and federal laws, as well as institutional policies, rules, and regulations.
• Prepare police blotters, maintain equipment and facilities, and operate office computers, alarms, and other sophisticated equipment.

Requirements

• Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice or High School/GED diploma supplemented by formal courses in criminal justice.
• Certification through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy or an equivalent out-of-state academy (must obtain SC certification within one year of hire if not already certified).
• Prior police experience required.
• Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats.
• Maintain firearms qualification.
• Possess a current South Carolina Driver’s License or obtain one within 30 days of establishing residency.
• Leadership, motivational, analytical, organizational, and strong verbal/written communication skills.
• Willingness to support and develop a positive department structure.
• Customer service experience in an automated environment.
• Basic knowledge of administrative functions, including keyboarding, word processing, report writing, and filing.
