The University Police Department is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for the university community of Cal State San Marcos. The department provides a 24-hour communication center staffed by Police Dispatchers. Police Dispatcher performs initial caller interrogation to determine the appropriate level of service needed in emergency situations and allocates appropriate personnel and resources to incidents. The dispatcher initiates fire, medical emergency, and non-emergency responses and response is provided by allied agencies. The dispatcher reports to the Lieutenant and will be under the lead direction of the Police Sergeant.
About the role
- Part time, temporary, non-exempt position ending on or before December 20, 2024.
- Reappointment dependent upon performance and administrative/budgetary considerations.
- The university reserves the right to terminate this appointment earlier than the scheduled expiration date.
Responsibilities
- Initial caller interrogation to determine appropriate level of service needed in emergency situations.
- Allocate appropriate personnel and resources to incidents.
- Initiate fire, medical emergency, and non-emergency responses.
- Respond to incidents with allied agencies.
- Report to the Lieutenant and under the lead direction of the Police Sergeant.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Completion of a police academy training program.
- Valid California driver’s license.
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings, nights, and weekends.
Qualifications
- Experience in law enforcement or emergency services preferred.
- Strong communication skills.
- Knowledge of emergency response procedures.
Skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively.
- Proficient in computer systems and software.
Benefits
- Shift differential pay of $1.35 per hour between 6:00 p.m. and midnight and $2.30 per hour between midnight and 6:00 a.m.

Pay
- Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $26.60 - $30.56 per hour (step 1 - step 8).
- CSU Classification Salary Range: $26.60 - $38.76 per hour.

- Variable work hours to include evenings, nights, and weekends.
