Police Civilian Investigator

Investigates and manages an investigative case load and assists Detectives and Police Officers in various Investigative Services Division’s (ISD) units to bring cases to closure. Some positions may be assigned to other units or special assignments. This classification performs a variety of tasks in support of specific, limited law enforcement activities in an investigative bureau of the Police Department.

Pay

The full salary range for this position is up to $35.94/hour or $74,755.20/annually. Anticipated starting salary may be up to the mid-point depending on candidate’s experience and internal equity.

Requirements

• Associate’s Degree from an accredited educational institution.
• Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
• Three years of investigative experience in law enforcement.
• An equivalent combination of education and job-related experience may substitute for the educational requirements on a year-for-year basis.
• Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date.
• Out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
• Obtain and maintain an Arizona Criminal Justice Information System (ACJIS) certification. Training is provided on duty, and certification testing is completed within the first six months of hire.
• Must reside in the State of Arizona during active employment by the City, regardless of remote work approval.
• Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required depending on division/department/service assignment.

Responsibilities

• Creates original and supplemental Incident Reports.
• Conducts follow-up phone calls, emails, and in-person contacts with members of the public, law enforcement, and various investigative partners.
• Contacts other law enforcement agencies and investigative leads for additional information, utilizing automated systems to research criminal history and conduct background checks.
• Contacts suspects by phone when authorized by a supervisor or when accompanied by a sworn officer.
• Creates and reviews Court Orders and Search Warrants and completes required paperwork.
• Attends court hearings for the purpose of testifying to job duties including investigations and reports.
• Manages, prioritizes, and organizes an investigative caseload.

Work Environment / Physical Demands

• Exposure to dirt, dust, pollen, inclement weather, temperature extremes, traffic hazards, body fluids, hazardous chemicals, firearms, various evidence, and unpleasant odors.
• Move objects weighing 50 pounds or less over short and long distances.
• Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
• Visually distinguish the full range of the color spectrum.
• Read maps and utilize visual and muscular dexterity to operate a motor vehicle, computer equipment, and two-way radio while maintaining constant vigilance to the surrounding area.
• Use a two-way radio to hear and respond to radio communications, voice instructions, and/or commands under a variety of working situations.
• Use appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) when needed/required.
• Travel to/from various locations.
• Work overtime as required.
• Work a variety of scheduled shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
