Civilian Crime Scene Investigator

Responsibilities

• Recognize, document, and collect physical evidence, including digital media.
• Conduct crime scene examinations to discover, preserve, and identify evidence.
• Create sketches and diagrams to establish the scene layout and evidence locations.
• Write detailed reports and maintain case documentation for both investigative and legal purposes.
• Provide expert testimony in court as required.
• Perform presumptive field tests on suspected illegal drugs.
• Oversee evidence-related activities at crime scenes and conduct follow-up forensic analysis.
• Coordinate evidence processing with external entities like the Northern Colorado Forensics Laboratory and the Colorado Bureau of Investigations.
• Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies as needed.
• Offer technical and professional assistance upon request.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 4-year Bachelor's Degree in Forensics or Natural Sciences preferred.
• Associate's degree or two years of accredited college or university study required.
• Flexible with time management and project pivoting.
• Clear communicator with effective interpersonal skills.
• Decisive and independent problem solver with skills in forensic science and natural sciences.
• Available for on-call work schedule assignments that require working nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as necessary.
• Must be able to drive a Crime Scene Investigations Van to the scene.
• Must possess a valid Driver's License.
• Must obtain CPR and First Aid certification within 12 months of hire.
• Must be able to use a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (S.C.B.A.) within 12 months of hire and complete the respirator Fit Test on a yearly basis.
