About the Role
Attends full-time Criminal Justice Training Center Basic Peace Officer Certification Program and passes the TCLEOSE licensing examination. The Cadet must pass all required testing and background investigation and be approved for sponsorship by UH-DPS.
Pursuant to the State of Texas Executive Order No. GA-48, this position researches, works on, or has access to critical infrastructure and requires the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the University infrastructure. This position requires personnel be routinely reviewed to determine whether criminal history or continuous connections to the government or political apparatus of a foreign adversary might prevent the employee from maintaining the security or integrity of the infrastructure.
Responsibilities
- Attends classes, participates in classroom discussions and group projects, and maintains comprehensive notebooks of subjects covered in classes.
- Prepares research papers and homework as assigned, maintaining satisfactory performance in all areas of the academy.
- Participates in the physical training program, firearms training program, defensive tactics program, and practical problems.
- Complies with assignments and instructions given by UH Department of Public Safety Chief of Police or by any member of the Criminal Justice Training Center Staff.
- Adheres to University of Houston System and University of Houston Central Campus policies and procedures.
- Adheres to University of Houston Department of Public Safety Standards of Operations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be willing to sign an educational contract.
- Must successfully complete all phases of the departmental selection process prior to attending the Criminal Justice Training Center Basic Peace Officer Certification Program.
- Requires a valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Must be able to work nights, weekends, and overtime assignments.
- Must be proficient with using a computer and Microsoft Office suite.
- Must pass a criminal history and valid Texas Driver’s License check prior to an interview.
- Must pass a background investigation prior to employment.
- Must pass a pre-employment drug screening.
- Applicants must complete the criminal history fields on their application; incomplete fields will disqualify the applicant.
- Required information includes: date of birth, driver’s license number, and last 4 digits of SSN.

- Extensive public contact with students, faculty, and staff.
- Required to work various assigned shifts, including days, evenings, nights, and weekends, and may be required to remain at their post for an additional shift.
- All staff are “essential personnel” and are required to report to work during inclement weather.
