About the role

Responsibilities
- Patrol assigned areas on foot, by motorcycle, in patrol cars, or by bicycle to enforce laws, prevent and discover crimes, investigate crimes, maintain order, and respond to calls and assist in non-criminal matters.
- Answer radio-dispatched or citizen requests for police services at the scene of accidents, domestic disputes, law violations, and altercations.
- Familiarize oneself with assigned area and its residents.
- Investigate illegal or suspicious activities, persons, and establishments.
- Locate, search, detain, and arrest law violators, following recognized police procedures.
- Interview and question victims, witnesses, and suspects; gather and preserve evidence.
- Provide first aid and assist in accidents and other victim situations.
- Participate in problem-solving and community-oriented policing projects.
- Direct and control traffic; investigate traffic accidents.
- Issue written citations for traffic and other violations.
- Inspect public establishments requiring licenses to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
- Operate police communication and computer equipment to obtain, disseminate, and report information.
- Attend community meetings to discuss crime prevention activities and crime problems.
- Write detailed incident, investigation, and other reports.
- Provide credible testimony in court.
- Mediate civil disputes and other non-criminal disagreements.
- Attempt to de-escalate and obtain appropriate services for mentally ill and emotionally disturbed persons.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- 21 years of age.
- Cadet will transition to Police Officer trainee position upon graduation from law enforcement academy.
- Valid driver's license and good driving record.
- Likely to be legally able to work in the United States.
- In good physical condition.
- No felony convictions or convictions involving moral turpitude.
- No illegal drug usage or related activities within the previous 5 years.
- No use of marijuana within the last year.
- No arrest for DUI, DWAI, or DUID within the last 5 years.
- Spanish/English bilingual skills desired but not required - preference points offered for Spanish fluency.

Skills

- Standing, walking, sitting, using hands and fingers to handle or feel equipment and/or evidence, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
- Ability to talk or hear clearly and distinctly face-to-face as well as over the radio and telephone in normal and adverse conditions.
- Arm and hand steadiness and manual dexterity sufficient to use weapons necessary to prevent injury or to protect self and others.
- Stamina and tolerance sufficient to remain physically and mentally alert for short bursts of extremely intense physical and/or mental activity separated by periods of physical and/or mental inactivity.
Benefits
- This position is benefits-eligible.
- Salary range: $25.53 - $34.47
- Hourly pay after successful completion of a 4-month academy and passing POST certification:
- Step A: $42.11
- Step B: $43.58
- Step C: $46.39
- Step D: $49.41
- Step E: $52.59
- Step F: $58.13
Pay
- $30.05 per hour through the academy.
- After successfully completing a 4-month academy and passing POST certification, Cadets will promote to Officer at Step A: $42.11 hourly, $87,598 annually.
Schedule
- Tentative hire date: December 31, 2026.
- Academy start date: January 2027.
