We are seeking a detail-oriented Plumbing Estimator to join our estimating team for commercial and industrial mechanical projects. The role involves preparing accurate, competitive bids by reviewing drawings, specifications, and subcontractor proposals; quantifying labor, materials, and equipment; and developing clear, well-supported takeoffs and cost proposals.
Responsibilities
- Review project drawings, specifications, and scopes of work to develop comprehensive plumbing takeoffs and cost estimates.
- Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for piping, fixtures, specialties, and mechanical systems using manual methods and estimating software (e.g., Trimble).
- Prepare complete bid packages, including material lists, labor hours, equipment needs, subcontractor scopes, and contingency allowances.
- Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and subcontractors to validate assumptions, resolve discrepancies, and refine estimates.
- Develop and maintain historical cost databases, unit prices, and productivity rates to ensure accurate, up-to-date pricing.
- Analyze subcontractor bids and change order requests and provide recommendations to management.
- Present estimates and scope clarifications to clients and internal stakeholders as needed.
- Support preconstruction and value-engineering efforts by identifying cost-saving alternatives and constructability improvements.
- Maintain clear documentation of takeoffs, assumptions, and estimate revisions for auditability and future reference.
- Stay current on market trends, material pricing, and labor rates to maintain competitive proposals.
Requirements
- Associate degree or technical certification in construction management, mechanical engineering technology, plumbing, or related field preferred; equivalent experience accepted.
- 3+ years of commercial plumbing or mechanical estimating experience, preferably in construction or contracting environments.
- Proven ability with estimating tools and software; experience with Trimble estimating software strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, piping materials, fixtures, codes, and installation methods.
- Accurate takeoff and math skills, with attention to detail and ability to produce clear, defensible estimates under deadline.
- Familiarity with construction contracts, scopes of work, and bid processes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with project teams and vendors.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and plan review tools (Bluebeam or similar).
- Highly organized, self-motivated, and able to manage multiple bids and priorities in a fast-paced environment.
