Physician - Neurology Section Chief

Duties

• Continuing the further development of the clinical programs
• Providing evaluation and treatment for patients seen in the outpatient clinics - labs - or inpatient services as assigned
• Providing patient care in the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System
• Attending in the outpatient clinics - labs - or on the inpatient services as assigned - and other clinical services needed by the Service
• Supervising and teaching medical students - interns and residents - and fellows
• Participating in the educational activities of the University of Colorado Denver School of Medicine
• Participating in Process Improvement/Quality Assurance projects and other administrative duties as assigned - including Section meetings
• Providing expert consultation and treatment to patients in all clinical settings
• Evaluating and triage specialty consults
• Obtaining medical histories - conducting physical examinations - recommending - ordering and evaluating appropriate laboratory testing - and planning and prescribing treatment for patients
• Coordinating medical management and care within their discipline with Primary Care providers and other Medical/Surgical services and personnel in a multidisciplinary health care delivery system
• Participating in on-call services as assigned - usually as part of a rotation with other physicians
• Monitoring the quality - safety - and appropriateness of patient care - both at the Section and facility level
• Performing administrative tasks as assigned - including - but not limited to peer reviews - Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluations (OPPE) - special projects that help fulfill and/or enhance the mission of the Department of Veterans Affairs as assigned by the Chief of Medicine/Chief of Staff/ELTP
• Participating in the educational programs for section personnel as well as the medical staff
• Demonstrating ethical conduct and serve as a positive role model to others at all levels of the organization
• Completing medical records in accordance with VA

Qualifications

• Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
• Physicians must have completed residency training - approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
• Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the accrediting bodies for graduate medical education - the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA) - in the list published for the year the residency - or fellowship if applicable - was completedOR (2) One year of post medical school training (internship - first year of residency - or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of post-training independent practice (performing under a full and unrestricted license) in the United StatesOR (3) Non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States (performing under a full and unrestricted license) performing duties related to the position they are applying for (United States fellowships would be creditable towards this requirement) - which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the Physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences)
• Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as ""Physician Resident Providers"" (PRPs).
• Residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
• In rare and unusual circumstances - the Facility Director can submit a memo to the VISN Director through the VISN Chief Medical Officer - who may approve requests for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement for Physicians whose composite record of experience - accomplishments - performance - and qualifications warrant such action.
