Physician - Neurology (Section Chief)

About the role

The Section Chief of Neurology oversees the clinical, educational, and administrative operations of the Neurology Section at the Ralph Johnson VA Medical Center. This role includes supervising and mentoring MUSC neurology residents and fellows, fostering their clinical training and professional development in alignment with both VA and MUSC program standards. The Section Chief collaborates with VA leadership and MUSC faculty to develop section policies, manage staffing and resources, and ensure compliance with VA regulations and accreditation requirements.

Responsibilities

• Performs and records history and physical examinations and records data from clinic visits.
• Evaluates, consults, develops diagnosis, and manages the Veteran.
• Enters progress notes in computerized medical record and completes workload documentation in a timely manner.
• Orders diagnostic tests, medications, laboratory tests as medically relevant for each patient.
• Provides timely follow-up on results and patient inquiries, including and not limited to completion of view alerts, secure messages and other patient communications.
• Determines medical assessment and develops treatment plans according to accepted protocols.
• Prescribes medications according to approved formulary, and in accordance with Federal and State Law.
• Educates patients concerning medical conditions and recommended treatments.
• Consults other specialties as appropriate, according to service agreements.
• Supervises other employees within the section and performs duties including performance appraisals, proficiencies, and other supervisory functions.

Requirements

This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program, a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Education

A degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

• Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted.
• Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) for the year in which the degree was granted.

Pay

Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases, 50-55 days of paid time off per year, traditional federal pension (5 years vesting), federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance, Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care, 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory, and possible $1,000 per year reimbursement for CME.

Schedule

Part-time: Monday-Friday; between the hours of 8:00am-4:30pm (subject to change based on applicant/agency needs)
