About the Role

The Medical-Surgical ICU (MSICU) at Brigham and Women's Hospital is a pioneering 10-bed unit and the first Physician Assistant-run ICU in our hospital. Our PAs practice at the highest level of their license, providing comprehensive critical care to a diverse mix of medical and surgical patients in a dynamic, high-acuity environment. The clinical team is supported by critical care-trained attending physicians with expertise spanning Acute Care Surgery, Pulmonary Medicine, Anesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Cardiology, and Interventional Radiology. PAs work alongside a critical care-specialized pharmacist, respiratory therapists, and experienced ICU nurses, fostering exceptional interdisciplinary collaboration and mentorship.

The Med Surg ICU PA is a member of the multidisciplinary Med Surg ICU provider team, caring for medical, emergency surgery, general surgery, and thoracic surgery critical care patients. The team includes intensivist attendings from Surgery, Anesthesiology, Pulmonary Medicine, and Emergency Medicine, as well as advanced practice providers. The PA reports to the Med Surg ICU Chief PA, Medical Director, and administratively to the Administrative Director of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, with daily supervision provided by the attending intensivist covering the unit.

Responsibilities

Clinical Duties

• Performs patient admitting histories and physicals; records information accurately in patient records in a timely fashion.
• Performs bedside procedures, including insertion of lines and tubes, postoperative wound care, and removal of tubes, lines, and sutures.
• Examines and evaluates patients and assists in developing their treatment plan with attending intensivists.
• Responds to emergency situations, managing patient issues as they arise in the ICU, including obtaining and evaluating studies/labs, writing orders, obtaining consultations, and interpreting lab values and x-rays with supervising physicians as needed.
• Provides age-specific care to medical/surgical intensive care patients from early adolescence through geriatric ages.
• Works under the direction of supervising critical care attendings.
• Provides teaching to medical students, physician assistant students, and other healthcare personnel as appropriate.
• Stays current with the latest literature in surgical critical care practice.
• Participates in quality improvement, patient safety, and research efforts as directed by service leadership; initiates these efforts as appropriate.

Non-Clinical Duties

• Leadership: Mentors healthcare personnel and supports team members by offering additional help when needed.

Requirements

• Master’s Degree in Physician Assistant Studies (required).
• Current Physician Assistant state license.
• 2 years of experience as a PA (preferred).

Pay

Annual pay range: $126,838.40 – $173,867.20 (Grade 7). Offers are based on skills, relevant experience, education, certifications, and other essential factors.
