PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON, CF - California Health Care Facility (CHCF)
Effective July 1, 2025, in accordance with the applicable Memorandum of Understanding, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented. PLP 2025 requires each full-time employee in Bargaining Unit 16, and related Excluded, Exempt, and Statutory Exempt employees, to have their base salary reduced by 4.62 percent and receive 8 PLP 2025 leave credits monthly for at least 16 months. Part-time employees are subject to the same conditions on a prorated basis, and permanent intermittent employees are subject to the same condition based on hours worked in the pay period.
About the role
Under the general direction of the Chief Physician & Surgeon, Correctional Facility (CF), the Physician & Surgeon, CF (Internal Medicine/Family Practice [IM/FP]) provides medical care to patients in a correctional facility. The role involves performing medical assessments, providing medical treatment, and offering clinical consultation and support to Advanced Practice Providers. The position also includes instructing nursing and other clinical staff on medical protocols and adhering to professional medical standards of care. On-call duties are assigned.
Responsibilities
- Provide medical care to patients in a correctional facility.
- Perform medical assessments and provide medical treatment as authorized by the medical license and consistent with Department policies, procedures, and clinical guidelines.
- Offer clinical consultation and support to Advanced Practice Providers.
- Instruct nursing and other clinical staff on medical protocols.
- Adhere to professional medical standards of care.
- Perform on-call duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the Medical Board of California or the California Board of Osteopathic Examiners.
- Possession of a valid internal medicine or family medicine Medical or Osteopathic Specialty Certificate issued by an American Medical Specialty Board or an American Osteopathic Specialty Board; or admissibility to an internal medicine or family medicine Specialty examination as evidenced by a written statement from the Secretary of the American Board of Family Medicine or the Secretary of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
- If using academic education above the twelfth grade to meet minimum qualifications, include a copy of your degree and/or unofficial school transcripts.
- Candidates new to CCHCS are required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan Fingerprinting.
- Tuberculosis (TB) testing is required for candidates new to CCHCS prior to appointment, followed by department annual TB testing/evaluation thereafter.
- Foreign education credential evaluation is required for degrees/transcripts obtained outside the U.S. Verification of U.S. course/degree equivalency must be submitted (e.g., via NACES).
Pay
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable. The authorized Hiring-Above-Minimum (HAM) rates for this classification are:
- P: $26,677 per month
- Q: $28,156 per month
- R: $29,640 per month
Employees in this class, employed within the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation and physically located/assigned to this institution, receive a pay differential equivalent to 15% of their monthly base pay.
Schedule
This is a full-time, permanent position. Travel may be required.
