Duties

  • Produce and distribute meteorology and oceanography (METOC) products and data to support the operating forces of the U.S. Department of Defense, allied forces, and other U.S. government agencies.
  • Perform full range of analyses for a wide variety of requests, including very difficult, complex, or unusual assignments for atmospheric, oceanic, or other technical assessments.
  • Develop and implement improved numerical models and analyses at all levels of classification.
  • Develop, implement, upgrade, evaluate and maintain automated systems to acquire, decode, and quality control of all types of METOC data to maximize the value of satellite data and imagery for environmental models and tactical products.
  • Present scientific results in a general public forum or produce a technical document for inter-agency distribution.

Requirements

  • Conditions of Employment: Must be a US Citizen. Must be determined suitable for federal employment. Must participate in the direct deposit pay program. New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E-Verify employment verification check. Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326. Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service. Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing. You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final Top Secret/SCI security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal. This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time. You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport. This is a Cyberspace Workforce position, work role code (624), proficiency level (BASIC). The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain qualifications in DoDM 8140.03 Cyber Workforce Qualification and Department of Navy policies. This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
  • Qualifications: GS-12: Your Resume Must Also Demonstrate At Least One Year Of Specialized Experience At Or Equivalent To The GS-11 Grade Level Or Pay Band In The Federal Service Or Equivalent Experience In The Private Or Public Sector. Specialized Experience Must Demonstrate The Following Experience with an advanced programming language such as FORTRAN, or other languages requiring compilation of software code. Experience with principles, theories, and practices of a combination of physical sciences, meteorology, oceanography, space, and computer science sufficient to adapt precedents, make significant departures from previous approaches, accommodate unique requirements, and to determine methods to use in evaluating and interpreting significant results. Experience with software engineering techniques as applied to the development and maintenance of automated, real-time systems. Experience with quality control systems such as Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) or Physical Sciences methodologies or modeling techniques. Experience developing and modifying analytical methods to make determinations, including responding to complex technical questions or solving unprecedented problems. Gs-11 Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience with computer programming languages such as C, C++, PYTHON, PERL/KORN SHELL, WEB SOFTWARE, and an advanced operating system such as LINUX. Experience with software and database configuration management practices. Experience with and knowledge of principles in applying highly specialized instruments (such as World Meteorological Organization data types and formats), techniques, and/or mathematical models used to evaluate their use and efficacy on areas of concern. Experience with or a broad understanding of environmental processes relevant to decision making.
