Position Overview

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Physical Science Research Professional to join the High Energy Density Science division. The division conducts research to determine the physical properties of matter in extreme conditions, spanning areas of high-pressure material science, fusion plasmas, and laboratory astrophysics.

Your Specific Responsibilities Include

  • Develop new experimental techniques to characterize the interactions of high-power optical lasers and X-ray lasers with argon and other high-Z cryogenic jet materials.
  • Perform research and experimental work focused on optimizing laser-jet interactions for neutron generation.
  • Complete data analysis from laser/X-ray experiments and generate summaries to track R&D progress.

To Be Successful In This Position You Will Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in physics, applied physics or related field and two years of research experience in plasma physics.
  • An in-depth understanding of experimental measurement techniques.
  • A demonstrated record of scientific productivity through publications and presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research.

Preferred Requirements Include

  • Demonstrated effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • A demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population.

  • Experience with and understanding of time-resolved x-ray and laser spectroscopy.

As a national laboratory, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is responsible for adhering to the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which require employees to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, employees must successfully complete the applicable tier of federal background investigation post hire and receive a favorable federal adjudication. The tier of federal background investigation will be determined by job duties and national security or public trust responsibilities associated with the job. All tiers of investigation include a declaration of illegal drug activities, including use, supply, possession, or manufacture within the last 1 to 7 years (depending on the applicable tier of investigation). Illegal drug activities include marijuana and cannabis derivatives, which are still considered illegal under federal law, regardless of state laws.
