Physical Science Research Professional (HEDS)

Position Overview

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is seeking a Physical Science Research Professional to join the High Energy Density Science division. The division conducts research to determine the physical properties of matter in extreme conditions, spanning areas of high-pressure material science, fusion plasmas, and laboratory astrophysics.

Your Specific Responsibilities Include

• Develop new experimental techniques to characterize the interactions of high-power optical lasers and X-ray lasers with argon and other high-Z cryogenic jet materials.
• Perform research and experimental work focused on optimizing laser-jet interactions for neutron generation.
• Complete data analysis from laser/X-ray experiments and generate summaries to track R&D progress.

To Be Successful In This Position You Will Bring

• Bachelor's degree in physics, applied physics or related field and two years of research experience in plasma physics.
• An in-depth understanding of experimental measurement techniques.
• A demonstrated record of scientific productivity through publications and presentations.
• Demonstrated ability to carry out independent research.

As a national laboratory, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is responsible for adhering to the Homeland Security Presidential Directive 12 (HSPD-12) and Department of Energy (DOE) Order 473.1A, which require employees to obtain and maintain a HSPD-12 Personal Identity Verification (PIV) Credential. To obtain this credential, employees must successfully complete the applicable tier of federal background investigation post hire and receive a favorable federal adjudication. The tier of federal background investigation will be determined by job duties and national security or public trust responsibilities associated with the job.
