About the role

Provides instructional assistance to students in the Physical Education Program.

Responsibilities

  • Performs a variety of responsible physical and instructional assistance tasks in accordance with written or oral directions from a teacher.
  • Supervises large groups of students on the playground during physical education classes.
  • Moves sports equipment, as needed, to assist in the physical education program; supervises correct use of equipment.
  • Oversees and participates in warm-up, cool-down, and stretching exercises.
  • Referees sports, games, and physical activities outdoors; reinforces skill instruction, rules, and elements of fair play.
  • Supervises large group activities indoors to accommodate students in physical education instruction during inclement weather, involving use of beanbags, foam balls, cards, etc.
  • Administers written or physical agility tests for the teacher.
  • Performs a variety of clerical tasks such as maintaining files and records, typing, preparing dittos, and operating various types of audio-visual and office equipment.
  • Affords assistance in class supervision on field trips.
  • Performs related work as required.

  • Demonstrate or reinforce instructions for rapid paced, rigorous sports, games, and fitness aerobics.
  • Stand for prolonged periods of time while observing, demonstrating or reinforcing physical education activities.
  • Carry and move sports equipment such as bats, balls, field markers, cones or sit-up mats; may weigh up to 50 pounds.
  • Establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Compile and maintain records and files.

Desirable

Written and oral proficiency in a second language.

Employment Standards

  • Salary: The listed salary rate represents the first and last steps of the salary range. Substitute employees are paid a fixed hourly rate.
  • After an offer of employment a candidate must submit proof of freedom from tuberculosis.
  • Also required after an offer, the candidate must complete a pre-employment physical examination and obtain fingerprint clearance through the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (district-paid).
  • The onboarding process includes legally mandated training(s) and reference checks.
  • In addition, pursuant to Senate Bill 848 (SB848), the district is required to conduct reference checks that include inquiry into whether the applicant has ever been the subject of a credible complaint, investigation, or disciplinary action related to child abuse, sexual misconduct, or sexual harassment.
  • Benefits for permanent employees who work 4 or more hours per day include medical, dental, vision and life insurance.

Benefits

  • Permanent employees with satisfactory service receive salary increases upon completion of their probationary period and at one-year intervals thereafter, up to the maximum rate.
  • Holidays: Regular classified employees are entitled to pay for authorized holidays, provided they were in a paid status during any portion of the working day immediately preceding or succeeding the holiday.
  • Sick Leave: One day of sick leave earned per month, accumulation is unlimited.
  • Retail: All new employees who work half time or more must become members of the California Public Employees Retirement System and the Federal Social Security program. Contributions are withheld from salary. Employees may become eligible for retirement at age 50 with a minimum of five years service.

Application Process

Applications are accepted on line at www.gusd.net and must be complete, contain all required documents and information, and be received (not postmarked) on or before the deadline. Applications may be rejected for any reason including, but not limited to, the following: late, incomplete or illegible materials; previous dismissal from the classified service; conviction of certain offenses; false, misleading statements or omissions of information on application materials. No additional information will be accepted after the final filing date listed.

Examination Process

A review of the applicants' experience and qualifications will be conducted. Based on that evaluation, a limited number of applicants whose qualifications best meet the current needs of the district will be invited to participate in the next step of the examination process. The examination process will consist of one or more related test parts covering any subject matter appropriate to the duties of the position. Qualified applicants will be advised of the test components and weights prior to the administration of the first test part. Eligibility List: Candidates successfully completing all phases of the application and examination procedure will be ranked on the appropriate eligibility list according to their total examination scores. This list is normally in effect for one year. Classification: When a vacant position is to be filled, the top three reachable ranks from the eligibility list are contacted for employment interviews. The supervisor of the vacant position will interview those candidates and may make a selection from any one of them. Depending on the vacancy, current employees in the same classification who have a transfer request on file, may also be interviewed. New employees must serve a six-month or one-year probationary period, depending on the classification involved. Fingerprint Requirement: California state law requires that all classified employees be fingerprinted. Candidates are responsible for paying the fees. Certificate of Tuberculosis Examination: New employees must furnish proof that within the last 60 days they have had a Mantoux tuberculin skin test. Accommodation: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, applicants with disabilities may request that reasonable accommodation be given related to the actual examination process. Requests must be made at the time of application. Physical Examination: Employees must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others. As a condition of employment, all prospective new hires must receive District approval relating to their fitness to work based on a physical examination. Tests must be given by a District-approved physician. Mandatory Child Abuse Reporting Training (AB1432): As a state requirement, all prospective employees of the district are required to complete the Mandated Reporter Educators Training course, prior to their start date of employment. The training must also be completed annually thereafter. Veterans Preference: Five additional points of credit are added in entry-level examinations to the final passing score of qualified veterans showing 30 days or more service during time of war (10 points for disabled veterans) upon presentation of proof of veterans' status (Form DD-214). This evidence must be presented during the examination procedure. No credit will be given after this period. Reminder: All current employees are reminded that in order to promote, an application must be filed during the filing period, tests must be taken, and passed. Permanent employees interested in a transfer must file a transfer request form.
