About the role

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a photo editor to join the Business News and Features teams in New York. This team drives visual coverage for our corporate, real estate, manufacturing, retail, and consumer travel desks. The role requires strong creative photographic ideas, assigning and research. We are seeking an adaptable team player who can both cover a specific beat and support multiple coverage areas, stepping in as needed to manage department needs and maintain seamless coverage. Photo Editors are responsible for producing a strong and dynamic quality of photography. Skills in how to create visuals for business coverage, including conceptual photo assigning, are recommended. Our content requires bold digital display on mobile and desktop platforms, and a thoughtful approach to print requirements. You will attend weekly bureau and art meetings, working closely with a group of editors, coverage chiefs, publishing and print editors, platform leads, section art directors, graphics, video and audience colleagues on breaking news, daily and enterprise coverage. We are looking for a digitally-forward editor with sharp editorial judgment and journalistic integrity who can perform strong agency and social media research with speed and efficiency.

Responsibilities

• Assign photography and run your own shoot production; commissioning original content, including shoots in WSJ’s in-house photography studio, as well as on location.
• Produce photo coverage across breaking news, daily news and feature articles, collaborating with newsroom editors, visual colleagues, SEO and platform teams, as well as Bureau and section chiefs and your department manager.
• Work in our publishing system to photo edit article builds. Combine different visual elements, anticipating photographic and other needs as stories develop in a fast-paced newsroom environment.
• Work with the editing desk, platform and off-platform editors to execute and surface the work strategically across all platforms.
• Assign photographers to stories - brainstorm creative photo solutions, produce the shoots (including security, travel, visa, releases, budget) and brief the photographer.
• Promote a diverse and exciting group of photographers and subjects, with an eye to building new audiences for our journalism.
• Negotiate estimates with photographers and photography archives/individuals.

Requirements

• A minimum of 3 years experience in an editorial photo editing role (or newsroom or photo production role).
• The photo position reports to a Managing Photo Editor.
• The role is based in our New York office.

• Fast digital editing skills and expertise working in a publishing system, quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines.

• Experience working in a fast-paced news environment and collaborating across teams.
• Familiarity with audience data tools and strategies for encouraging readers to engage with digital content.
• Deep knowledge of responsive design and best practices for building stories for mobile devices.
• A thorough understanding of the brand values and mission of The Wall Street Journal and how our journalism should be selected, executed and presented in line with those values.
• Thorough working knowledge of web tools and programs, including content management systems, Photoshop, PhotoMechanic, video editing tools, FTP, and social media tools.

Pay

Base Pay Range: $95,000 - $110,000.
