PURPOSE STATEMENT
The Phlebotomist's role is to provide support in delivering healthcare by collecting patient samples for testing or transportation to labs. They must maintain high standards of professionalism, confidentiality, and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
Essential Functions
- Aid in specimen collection from patients as directed.
- Transport specimens to the correct lab for testing.
- Ensure specimens are labeled correctly and billed accurately.
- Inform physicians of results and communicate with patients.
- Maintain laboratory records and prepare supplies.
- Schedule tests and treatments and collaborate with care team members.
- Create, copy, file, and maintain patient files and records.
- Compile and present statistical data for reports.
- Participate in professional development and evaluate team performance.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and treat staff, patients, and visitors with respect.
- Communicate effectively with patients, medical staff, and the public.
- Operate a computer and use good judgment in emergency situations.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of medical experience in a laboratory or related field.
- Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred.
- American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required within 30 days of hire.
- Excellent customer relations, communication skills, and organizational abilities.
- Self-motivation and adherence to hospital/clinic policies and procedures.
Physical/Mental Requirements
- Ability to sit and stand for long periods.
- Use standard office equipment and perform manual tasks.
- Work under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Utilize manual and bi-manual dexterity, near vision, speech, and hearing.
- Occasionally lift and carry up to 100 lbs.
- Travel occasionally, including flying and driving rental cars.
- Relocate to other jobs as needed.
Shift Requirements
As needed by the department, including nights and weekends.
Education/Experience/Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of medical experience in a laboratory or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Medical assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred.
- American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification required within 30 days of hire.
