General Summary
The primary responsibilities of a phlebotomist are performing venipuncture and capillary blood collections and ordering tests in the computer system. The phlebotomist performs blood collections on all types of patients including inpatients, outpatients, emergency room patients and nursing home patients. The phlebotomist also helps with maintaining laboratory files, ensuring proper routing of reports, and preparing daily management reports.Principle Duties And Responsibilities
- Performs venipuncture and capillary blood collections on neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Greets people coming to the laboratory for laboratory services; gives assistance when requested; acts as a direct laboratory contact with the public.
- Deals with neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in an appropriate and professional manner.
- Performs temporary registration for reference and nursing home patients.
- Orders outpatient tests in the CPSI Computer System.
- Fills laboratory reports and requisitions.
- Maintains report and requisition files so they are readily retrievable.
- Maintains logs of tests sent to reference labs.
- Prints daily management reports for the Director of Laboratory Services.
- Answers incoming phone calls and directs inquiries to appropriate person or department.
- Drives to area nursing homes to collect blood samples when necessary.
